    • A comminuting apparatus includes a frame, a set of overlapping scissor rolls, a first drive motor, and a second drive motor. The frame has an enclosure with an entrance opening for receiving waste material. The set of overlapping scissor rolls is carried within the enclosure for rotation, including a first scissor roll and a second scissor roll. The first drive motor is coupled to the first scissor roll, and the second drive motor is coupled to the second scissor roll. The first drive motor is operative to drive the first scissor roll at a substantially variable operating speed. The second drive motor is operative to drive the second scissor roll in co-rotation at a substantially constant operating speed.

    • A hinged carton integrally molded of polystyrene foam and adapted to be locked shut by a flap extending upwardly from the bottom part of the carton inside a side wall of the carton cover and carrying one or more prongs so that the latter will be biased outwardly to snap into a corresponding number of holes provided in said cover side wall, the ruggedness of said carton being materially enhanced over similar cartons of the prior art by the local beefing up of said cover side wall in the immediate areas bordering said holes incidental to the functioning of a novel method of and apparatus for manufacturing said carton. Said apparatus is embodied optionally in a forming tool or in a form-and-trim tool and embraces relatively vertically reciprocable carton shaping matched-molds operating on a heated thermo-plastic web of polystyrene foam to produce one or more entire cartons with each reciprocation. In said method each hole in said cover side wall is formed by two matching wedge shaped cylindrical scissor blades which extend from the male and female matched molds to slide together face-to-face in a plane parallel with the direction the molds approach and separate from each other to comprise a hole-forming plug when said molds arrive at their final carton molding positions of proximity, said scissor blades being then mutually slidingly withdrawn vertically in opposite directions from the cover side wall hole formed thereby as the molds are separated vertically during the second half of a carton forming reciprocation, to release the carton from between the molds. The aforementioned beefing up of said cover side wall is enhanced by recessing the internal carton side wall forming faces of said molds in the areas thereof immediately adjacent to said scissor blades.

    • A thermoforming trim press and a drive assembly for a thermoforming trim press are provided. The drive assembly includes a frame, a drive motor, a drive linkage, a first bevel gear, and a second bevel gear. The drive motor is supported by the frame. The first bevel gearbox is supported by the frame and has an input shaft coupled with a drive gear, an output shaft coupled with a ring gear, and a housing supporting the input shaft, the output shaft, the drive gear and the output shaft in meshed gear rotation. The second bevel gearbox is supported by the frame in opposed relation with the first bevel gearbox and has an input shaft coupled with a drive gear, an output shaft coupled with a ring gear, and a housing supporting the input shaft, the output shaft, the drive gear and the output shaft in meshed gear rotation, the second bevel gearbox driven via the drive linkage with the output shaft driving in counter-rotation relative to the output shaft of the first bevel gearbox. A method for driving a moving platen on a trim press is also provided using opposed, identical beveled gearboxes.

    • In accordance with one aspect of this invention an improved trim press is taught for use in separating molded articles from a web of material. The trim press includes a frame, a drive motor carried by the frame, a first platen carried by the frame, and a second platen carried by the frame and configured to be moved in reciprocation relative to the first platen. A first flywheel assembly is provided on the trim press having a weight with an eccentric mass, the weight being driven in rotation by the motor and coupled to drive the second platen via at least one kinematic linkage. The trim press also includes a second flywheel assembly having a weight with an eccentric mass, the weight being driven in rotation by the motor and coupled to drive the second platen via at least one kinematic linkage. In operation, the first flywheel assembly and the second flywheel assembly are constructed and arrange such that the eccentric mass of the associated weight on the first flywheel assembly is positioned in mirror image with the eccentric mass of the associate weight of the second flywheel assembly, the first and the second flywheel assemblies being driven in counter rotation so as to substantially cancel out dynamic forces produced out of the axis of movement of the movable platen. The flywheel assembly can also include an output shaft driven in rotation by the motor and a weight having interlocking features for mating the weight on the shaft for rotation.

    • A solid waste comminuting apparatus (10) for reducing solid waste material (12). The apparatus (10) has rolls (42, 44) for severing material that is fed into the entrance (32). After the material is severed, it is carried by an airstream to a fan (112). The subdivided pieces are directed to a separator screen (131) mounted within the centrifugal housing. The airstream carries the small pieces (14e) through the separator screen (131) into an outer volute chamber (135) for discharge from the apparatus. The large pieces (14a-14d) which do not pass through the separator screen (131) are recycled through a recycle outlet (143) and a recycle conduit (150) back to the rolls (42, 44) for further size reduction.
