    • An implantable electrode system includes a connector for connecting a proximal end of the electrode to an implantable medical apparatus, such as for stimulating living tissue, and a distal end at which a tip electrode is located. The proximal end and the distal end are connected by a conductor which electrically connects the medical apparatus to the electrode tip, and which is surrounded by a flexible insulating sleeve. In order to provide an indifferent electrode having a large surface area relative to the size of the tip electrode, the insulating sleeve is provided with a section formed by an electrically conductive, flexible material, which serves as the indifferent electrode. The flexibility of the electrode system is retained, while providing an indifferent electrode of optional size.

    • In order to prevent a person handling a defibrillator during manufacture and in conjunction with implantation of the defibrillator from receiving an electrical shock due to a fault, a protective arrangement is provided for the defibrillator. This protective arrangement is in the form of a plug part detachably connectable to the defibrillator housing and having terminal pins engaging into the connecting sockets of the defibrillator which is present for receiving the electrode leads. The terminal pins produce an electrically conductive connection in the sockets and are directly connected to one another inside the plug part via an electrical resistor. In case of a fault, the high-voltage energy generated between the connecting sockets is harmlessly absorbed in the resistor.

    • In the determination of an optimal rate for the delivery of stimulation pulses to a heart, the stroke volume (SV) of a heart ventricle is measured as a function of heart rate (HR), e.g. by determination of impedance in individual heart cycles whose duration is varied from the duration corresponding to the prevailing rate or the basic rate regarded as optimal for stimulation. The optimal rate should lie at the knee of this function. A corresponding knee is also found in the curve for cardiac output (CO). This rate is determined by calculation of an auxiliary function, e.g. HF=HR.times.CO, which displays a peak at the heart rate at which the knee is located, and the heart rate is determined which yields this maximum. The heart rate determined in this manner is subsequently employed as a basic rate.
