    • A distributed power train (10) communications system for sending and receiving signals between a lead locomotive (14) and remote locomotives (12A/12B/12C) in the train (10). A lead (14) initiated message is received by at least the remote locomotive (12A/12B) nearest to the lead unit (14). The receiving remote unit (12A/12B) retransmits the message for receiving by the next remote unit (12C) in the train. Thus the message leapfrogs down the train from the lead unit (14) to the remote units (12A/12B/12C). When the last remote unit (the nth remote unit) (12C) receives the message, the last remote (12C) transmits a status or other response message to the lead unit's message. The status message is received at the (n-1)th remote unit (12A/12B), which appends its status message and transmits the combined status messages toward the lead unit (14). Each successive remote unit receives the status messages of the other remote units and appends its status message, until the concatenated status message reaches the lead unit (14).

    • A system for rolling a vehicle includes first and second guide tracks. The guide tracks extend over a receptacle positioned to receive cargo being carried by the vehicle. The guide tracks are elongated from an input segment to an output segment of the route. The first and second guide tracks are disposed on opposite sides of the input and output segments. The guide tracks are shaped to engage first and second guides, respectively, that are coupled to the vehicle when the vehicle travels from the input segment of the route toward the output segment of the route and over the receptacle. The guide tracks are curved over the receptacle to translate movement of the vehicle over the receptacle from the input segment of the route to the output segment of the route into a rolling motion of the vehicle that causes the cargo to be dumped into the receptacle.

    • A method of controlling a neutral section operation of a train (14) including a lead locomotive (16) and at least one remote locomotive (12) in communication with the lead locomotive. The locomotives are electrically powered from respective electrical connections to a catenary (22) having at least one neutral section (26). The method includes sensing when a lead locomotive is proximate the neutral section of the catenary. The lead locomotive then commands the remote locomotive to perform a neutral section operation when the lead locomotive has traveled a distance equal to a distance (20) between the lead locomotive and the remote locomotive. The lead locomotive determines when to issue a neutral section command based on a speed of the lead locomotive and an elapsed time from when the lead locomotive senses its location proximate the neutral section.
