    • A press blanket for a press device in a paper making machine, or the like, is formed of an elastomeric blanket material and fully embedded layers of reinforcement threads. The radially inner layer is formed of longitudinal threads which extend parallel to the axis of the press blanket. The radially outer layer is formed of circumferential threads which are wound in the direction of blanket motion and are wound generally helically. The threads are fully surrounded by the layer of homogeneous elastomeric material, that is formed from a single pouring. The circumferential threads have a diameter of at most 1/500 of the outside diameter of the fully rounded press blanket. In a unit area of the press blanket, the tensile strength of the circumferential threads is at least 40% greater than the tensile strength of the longitudinal threads. An apparatus for forming such a press blanket includes a rotatable pouring cylinder on which the longitudinal threads are supported, an elastomeric material pouring nozzle which moves longitudinally over the pouring cylinder and an unwinding device for delivering the circumferential threads in a helical manner and located just after the pouring nozzle above the pouring cylinder.

    • A drive mechanism of a suction or deflection adjustment roll having a spur wheel gear. For a suction roll, a stationary suction box may be guided outward through the drive mechanism to be coupled with a suction device. An external gear ring may be rigidly coupled to a driven or gear end of the roll to mesh with a driven pinion. The driven pinion may be driven via a drive shaft coupled to the driven pinion through a pair of enmeshed gears. The driven pinion and an end of the drive shaft coupled to the pinion may each include a self-adjusting bearing, each self-adjusting bearing being adjacently positioned and supported on a bearing journal. The self-adjusting bearing associated with the end of the drive shaft may exhibit radial play with respect to one of an inside diameter of the drive shaft or an outside diameter of the bearing journal, which may permit tilting of the pinion with respect to the bearing journal. Force transference may be improved by positioning the pair of enmeshed gears connecting the drive shaft and pinion between the adjacent self-adjusting bearings.

    • A cantileverable roll for use in a roll press, wherein the cantileverable roll cooperates with a backing roll. The cantileverable roll has a rotating surface and is either a solid rotatable roll body or a stationary roll body with a rotatable shell around it. A journal at each end of the cantileverable roll is supported in a respective bearing bracket. At one end of the roll, preferably the drive end, there is a non-rotating extension piece which extends out axially from the roll body and is fastened to the bearing bracket at that end. A tension bar or the like connects the extension piece to a stationary structural part and introduces force in the roll body which compensates for the weight of the roll when the other end of the roll is temporarily unsupported and the roll is cantilevered. The backing roll may also be cantilevered. The various techniques for supporting the one end of the roll by using the coupling element from the extension piece to the frame of the paper making machine are disclosed. The cantileverable roll and the roll press are particularly useful in a paper making machine.
