    • Branched hydroxyl-functional polyester resin having an average hydroxyl functionality of >2, a hydroxyl number of 25 to 300 mg KOH/g, and a number average molecular weight within the range of from 500 to 3,000, which polyester resin comprises polyalkylene oxide groups and, optionally, sulphonate groups, wherein the polyester resin comprises the reaction product of 1) a mixture of carboxylic acids comprising 50 to 80 mole % of an m- and/or p-aromatic and/or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid, 20 to 50 mole % of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and/or aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with more than 6 carbon atoms, and, optionally, a tri- or higher-functional acid, and 2) a mixture of alcohols comprising an aliphatic diol with at least 4 carbon atoms and/or a cycloaliphatic diol with at least 4 carbon atoms, a C1-C4 alkoxy polyalkylene oxide glycol and/or C1-C4 alkoxy polyalkylene oxide 1,3-diol having a number average molecular weight of 500 to 3,000, and, optionally, a tri- or higher-functional polyalcohol, wherein the polyester resin has a carboxylic acid number of ≦20 mg KOH/g (≦0.357 meq COOH groups per g of resin) and, optionally, a sulphonate number of ≦4 mg KOH/g (≦0.070 meq sulphonate groups per g of resin), the acid groups being at least partly neutralised.

    • The invention relates to an air-drying aqueous polymer dispersion based on a core/shell polymer having an alkyd resin in the core and an addition polymer grafted thereon, with 50-90 weight percent of the core/shell polymer being composed of alkyd resin and 50-10 weight percent being composed of addition polymer, and with the alkyd resin containing more than 40 and up to 80 weight percent of unsaturated fatty acid, at least 5 mole percent of which contains conjugated double bonds, having an acid number of not more than 5 (mg KOH/g), and having a number average molecular weight in the range of 400 to 5000, and with the addition polymer having an acid number in the range of 40 to 200 (mg KOH/g). The aqueous polymer dispersions according to the invention were found to be highly stable and to have a comparatively low viscosity, even at concentrations of 40 weight percent and above. It was found that topcoats obtained using dispersions with a high alkyd resin content are virtually identical in terms of properties with topcoats obtained in a traditional manner using alkyd paints based on organic solvents, while the gloss of topcoats obtained using the polymer dispersions according to the invention frequently is even higher.

    • Stable dispersion of addition (co)polymers in an inert relatively non-polar organic hydrocarbon liquid, the dispersed particles embracing both a (co)polymer and a polymer containing an ethylenically unsturated monamer. The (co)polymers are substantially composed of:(a) 5 to 100 mole % of styrene and/or methyl styrene;(b) 0 to 95 mole % of alkyl methacrylate having 1 or 2 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and/or alkoxyalkylene methacrylate having 1 or 2 carbon atoms in the alkoxy group and the alkylene group;(c) 0 to 40 mole % of alkyl methacrylate having 3 to 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group;(d) 0 to 40 mole % of hydroxyalkyl methacrylate having 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and/or glycidyl methacrylate; and(e) 0 to 20 mole % of methacrylic acid.The (co)polymers are grafted to a polymer of a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 10,000, at least 60% by weight of which consists of butadiene, the weight percentage of the butadiene-containing polymer being 20 to 200% of that of the (co)polymer and the sum of this percentage and the percentage of styrene and/or methyl styrene in the copolymer being higher than or equal to 50.At room temperature the dispersions dry to form a smooth and very glossy film.
