    • An apparatus for helping to protect a vehicle occupant comprises a vehicle seat belt system (14) including a buckle (20), a tongue assembly (90), and an inflatable seat belt portion (12) connected with the tongue assembly. An inflation mechanism (10) connected with the buckle (20) includes an actuatable inflator (60) and a first conduit (70) in fluid communication with the inflator. A second conduit (110) is in fluid communication with the inflatable seat belt portion (12). The first conduit (70) has a rupturable portion (82) blocking fluid flow out of the first conduit toward the second conduit (110). The first conduit (70), upon actuation of the inflator (60), moves from a first position in which the first conduit is not in fluid communication with the second conduit (110) to a second position in which the first conduit is in fluid communication with the second conduit. The rupturable portion (82) is ruptured to enable fluid flow from the first conduit (70) to the second conduit (110) to inflate the inflatable seat belt portion (12). Means (58) for venting erroneously released inflation fluids are also provided.

    • An energy management device (10) for seat belt webbing (18) for restraining a vehicle occupant includes a base (40) for attachment to the vehicle. The device (10) also includes a plastically deformable torsion bar (60) having a first portion (66) fixed relative to the base (40) and a second portion (72) rotatable relative to the first portion and the base. The torsion bar (60) twists upon rotation of the second portion (72) relative to the first portion (66). A spool (80) is supported on the base (40) and is fixed for rotation with the second portion (72) of the torsion bar (60) relative to the first portion (66) of the torsion bar. The spool (80) has an outer peripheral surface (90). A flexible member (100) is wound on the outer peripheral surface (90) of the spool (80). The flexible member (100) has a first end portion (104) connected with the spool (80) and a second end portion (110) extending from the spool (80) for connection with the seat belt webbing (14) of the vehicle. The torsion bar (60) twists and the spool (80) rotates in an unwinding direction upon the application of tensile force from the seat belt webbing (18) to the flexible member (100) in an amount exceeding a predetermined amount. The torsion bar (60) when twisting resists unwinding of the flexible member (100) from the spool (80). The distance between the axis of rotation (54) of the spool (80) and the outer peripheral surface (90) of the spool (80) varies to vary the resistance to unwinding of the flexible member (100) felt by the occupant. The resistance to unwinding varies as a function of the amount of the flexible member that is unwound from the spool.

    • An air bag module (80) mounted in a vehicle seat back (22) includes a single air bag (90) which has a thorax portion (110), a neck portion (120), and a head portion (100). The head portion (100) of the air bag (90) is mounted on a support tube (260) for sliding movement relative to an inflator (240). Upon actuation of the inflator (240), the thorax portion (110) of the air bag (90) inflates first, in a forward direction out of the seat back (22). The head portion (100) of the air bag (90), and the support tube (260), move upward out of the top of the seat back (22). The head portion (100) then inflates in a forward direction after the thorax portion (110) inflates, into a position to protect the head of the occupant. The neck portion (120) of the air bag (90), when inflated, has a relatively small width as compared to the head portion (100) and the thorax portion (110).

    • An apparatus (10) for protecting a vehicle occupant including a vehicle seat belt webbing (20) which is extensible about a vehicle occupant, a housing (134) connectable to a component of a vehicle, and a flexible member (280) having a first end portion (284), a second end portion (286), and an intermediate portion (288) extending between the first and second end portions (284, 286). A part (310) of the intermediate portion (288) is located in the housing (134) and cooperates with the housing to define an expansible chamber (308) in the housing. The housing (134) includes a surface (156) for guiding movement of the part (310) of the intermediate portion (288) in an arcuate path (224) to expand the expansible chamber. A clutch (270), actuatable in response to expansion of the expansible chamber (308), is provided to connect the first end portion (284) of the flexible member (280) with the seat belt webbing (20). A gas generator (316) is provided for, when actuated, exerting a first force on the part (310) of the intermediate portion (288) to move the part of the intermediate portion along the arcuate path (224) in the housing (134) to expand the expansible chamber (308) and actuate the clutch and to move the first end portion (284) of the flexible member (280) in a direction to move the seat belt webbing (20) a first distance and tighten the seat belt webbing against the occupant.

    • An apparatus (20) for use in simulating vehicle side impacts includes a target sled (24) and a bullet sled (26). A door structure (46) is disposed on the target sled (24). A seat (44) is disposed on the target sled (24) adjacent to an inner side (58) of the door structure (46) to support a test dummy (22) in a desired relationship with the door structure. A safety apparatus (178) with an air bag (182) is supported adjacent to the door structure (46) and the seat (44). Upon impacting of the bullet sled (26) against an outer side (60) of the door structure (46), the air bag (182) is inflated and the door structure is moved relative to the seat (44). As this occurs, a connector assembly (238) interconnects the door structure (46) and the bullet sled. Continued movement of the bullet sled (26) and door structure (46) relative to the target sled (24) moves the seat (44) along tracks (154 and 156) disposed on the target sled (24). After the bullet sled (26) has moved the door structure (46) to a predetermined position relative to the target sled (24), the bullet sled engages the target sled and moves the target sled and the deceleration of the bullet sled and target sled are controlled.

    • A vehicle occupant restraint apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint (12) supported on the vehicle door (16). The door (16) has a detachable inner trim panel section (32) with an outer side surface (42) that partly defines the occupant compartment (20). The apparatus further includes a source of inflation fluid (14) and a manifold (52) for directing inflation fluid from the source (14) into the restraint (12) to inflate the restraint (12). The detachable inner trim panel section (32) of the door (16) is a panel portion of the restraint (12) which moves into the occupant compartment (20) upon inflation of the restraint (12), and has an inner side surface (40) for contacting the inflation fluid directed into the restraint (12). The inner side surface (40) of the panel portion of the restraint (12) partly defines the volume enclosed within the restraint (12) when the restraint (12) is inflated.
