    • In accordance with the presently preferred embodiment of this invention, a motor vehicle chassis includes a subframe of generally box shape that is supported on a vehicle frame by four resilient mounts. An independent front suspension has some of its suspension members pivotally supported on the vehicle frame and some pivotally supported on the subframe by resilient pivots. A vehicle power plant is supported on the subframe by a resilient mount. Suspension vibrations are isolated from the passenger carrying vehicle body supported on the frame by the resilient pivots which connect the suspension members to the subframe and the resilient mounts which connect the subframe to the regular vehicle frame. Power plant vibrations are isolated from the vehicle body by the resilient mount which connects the power plant to the subframe and the resilient mounts which connect the subframe to the vehicle frame.

    • A rotary internal combustion engine is disclosed having a rotor housing presenting an internal epitrochoid surface which is electrolytically coated with a composite of nickel and a carbide of silicon. A rotor piston is mounted for planetary movement within the rotor housing and carries a plurality of apex seal strips each comprised of a distinct wear-resistant portion and a distinct supporting portion. The wear-resistant portion is constituted of a sintered powder compact principally of iron and titanium carbide. The supporting portion is constituted of a sintered powder compact of high strength aluminum having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than said wear-resistant portion. Both portions are mechanically keyed together to resist loads transverse to the strip and to make a mechanical joint as said portions differentially expand. The supporting portion is constituted of a material having a lower specific gravity than the wear-resistant portion; the wear-resistant portion has higher wear and antigalling properties as well as a lower dynamic coefficient of friction than the supporting portion.

    • The present disclosure relates to a bumper for a vehicle suspension that is constructed to resiliently arrest extreme jounce deflection of a motor vehicle suspension system. The bumper, in its preferred embodiment, includes a bracket having a pair of side walls and a horizontal top wall. The bracket is welded to the vehicle''s axle and its side walls pivotally support the end of a suspension link. The top wall has a pair of slots and a normally flat resilient piece has its ends extending inwardly through the slots. The resilient piece is supported in a broad arcuate shape. Upon extreme jounce deflection of the suspension, the resilient element engages a vehicle frame member or other support element and resiliently arrests the jounce movement of the unsprung suspension components.

    • A heatable windshield assembly is disclosed. The assembly has a first sheet of glass with resistance wires and electrical structure overlying its inner surface. A first sheet of vinyl overlies the resistance wires and the electrical structure and bondably contacts the inner surface of the first glass sheet. The first sheet of vinyl has a reduced level of plasticizer therein. A second sheet of vinyl overlies and bondably contacts the first sheet of vinyl. The second sheet of vinyl has a normal level of plasticizer therein. A second sheet of glass bondably contacts the second sheet of vinyl. The bonding of the glass and vinyl sheets is accomplished in a glass laminating operation.

    • This disclosure relates to a clutch actuating system having means for establishing initial free play without using an external gauge. A clutch system in accordance with this invention may have a clutch pedal, a clutch release lever and a Bowden wire assembly interconnecting the pedal and the lever. The sheath portion of the Bowden wire has one of its ends secured to a bracket adjacent the clutch release lever. The other end of the sheath is secured to the vehicle fire wall adjacent the clutch pedal where an externally threaded fitting in the second end of the sheath fits within a tubular housing bolted to the fire wall. The end of the tubular housing has four angularly spaced apart slots in its end face. A special adjustment nut on the threaded fitting has four axially extending projections arranged to engage the tubular housing. During initial installation of the clutch actuating mechanism, the adjustment nut is rotated to remove slack in the Bowden wire. When the nut is tightened finger tight and no more slack remains in the Bowden wire assembly, the projections on the nut will engage the end of the tubular housing. The nut is then turned through a few degrees in either direction until the projections drop into the slots in the end of the tubular housing. The adjustment nut is then pulled into seated engagement with the end of the housing and held by a spring clip. The length of the projections provides and assures the appropriate amount of free play in the clutch actuating system.

    • Coupling apparatus suitable for use as part of a combination fuel delivery-vapor recovery system for filling automobile fuel tanks. The apparatus includes an orifice member attached to the inlet pipe of the fuel tank having one or more recesses in the periphery of its orifice which are positioned to correspond with tab means extending radially outwardly from the nozzle spout. The orifice member also includes one or more cam surfaces engageable with the tab means when the nozzle spout is received within the orifice member and the tab means have passed through the recesses. Rotation of the nozzle spout relative to the orifice member causes the tab means to move along the cam surfaces and to compress a resilient seal positioned between a portion of the nozzle assembly and the orifice member.
