    • A lift for raising or lowering a wheelchair into or from a vehicle, such as a trailer or bus, which comprises a platform pivoted at a single point or location for swinging through about 90.degree. from beneath the trailer to a position at right angles thereto. The pivot is on the end of a shaft which may be raised and lowered so that the lift may be on the ground to receive a wheelchair and then lifted to a height of the level of the doorsill of the trailer for the wheelchair to be wheeled into the vehicle. The vehicle need be changed in no way, but the lift will be just added thereto.

    • A load lifting and lowering platform comprises a pair of hingedly interconnected platform sections that are foldable between a horizontally extending, load bearing position and a vertically extending collapsed position. A forward one of the platform sections is hingedly connected at its forward edge to lower ends of a pair of runner assemblies that are vertically movably mounted in a supporting framework. A pair of chains are interconnected between upper ends of the pair of runner assemblies and outer ends of the outer one of the platform sections. Cooperating cam elements, interposed between the forward edge of the forward platform section and the supporting framework, translate vertical movement of the runner assemblies into angular movement of the platform sections, in cooperation with the chains, for folding and unfolding of the platform sections.

    • There are disclosed two forms of load lifting and lowering unit for attachment to a vehicle. The units are of the kind in which a load platform is carried between two parallel spaced-apart articulated parallelogram linkages, movable in unison up and down guide members spaced across an access opening of the vehicle to raise and lower a load to and from the access opening. An inextensible tie member, pivotally connected between the platform and a swinging arm of the parallelogram linkage, causes the platform automatically to close off the access opening when the linkages are folded towards the vehicle. In one embodiment, the swinging arm cooperates with a fixed stop during upward movement of the linkages to effect such closure: in the other embodiment, a fluid operated ram swings the platform upwardly about its pivot to fold the linkages towards the vehicle and cause the platform to close off the access opening.

    • A vehicle load lifting and lowering apparatus, which can be used as a vehicle tail lift to lift and lower loads of up to 8 tons between the level of the ground on which the vehicle stands and the level of the vehicle's load carrying deck, comprises a pair of parallel spaced apart guide columns which can be swung via a deformable articulated linkage towards and away from the vehicle. Runners slidably mounted in equal numbers on each column support between them a load carrying platform, and hydraulic rams power the runners (and hence the platform) up and down the columns during load lifting operations. An arm is secured to the guide column and each articulated linkage so as to be movable from a first, inoperative, position in which movement of the runners along the columns effects only raising or lowering of the load carrying platform, to a second position, in which the arm is locked to one of the links of the articulated linkage and projects into the path of movement of one of the runners so that powered sliding movement of the runners up the columns is transmitted to the linkage to move the guide columns towards or away from the vehicle. In the disclosed embodiment, there are two hydraulic rams, associated one with each guide column and each operable in two synchronized stages.

    • A loading and unloading system for a bus includes a generally flat platform upon which a person in a wheel chair can be moved into position from a sidewalk or roadway into the bus on the floor thereof or reverse. The bus has the usual air operated doors which open or close and permit use of conventional steps for normal movement of a passenger into the bus or departure from the bus. In order to accommodate a crippled or disabled person and particularly one in a wheel chair, a generally flat platform sufficiently large upon which a wheel chair may rest is provided. Sensing means to insure the proper positioning of a wheel chair is provided after which power means can be activated for elevating the platform from ground level to bus floor level or reverse. During movement of the platform it is maintained in a generally horizontal position. To provide adequate safeguards, the platform moving means is interlocked with the power means for operating the doors to the bus interior and with the brake system of the bus so that bus movement or door movement during movement of the platform is impossible. The bus may be equipped with a conventional rear door and steps. While the bus may otherwise be used in conventional fashion, its preferred field of application is in connection with pick-up or discharge of crippled passengers who would normally be unable to utilize public conveyances such as conventional busses.
