    • The driving element and driven element of the speed variator are rotatably mounted on two parallel axes, one of which is displaceable with respect to the other. These two elements are connected to each other by a series of driving crank-arms, one end of which is pivotally coupled to one element at different points of a circle having the same axis whilst the opposite end is intended to be coupled with the other element at a point of a circle having the same axis as that other element by a unidirectional coupling. These couplings consist of shoes pivotally mounted on the corresponding ends of the driving crank-arms and being each capable of jamming in turn on a circular track provided on the corresponding element of the variator whilst the other shoes slide on the track, all the driving crank-arms being intended to revolve in the same diametral plane or in two parallel planes.

    • A self adjusting tensioning system for a variable transmission. An endless belt is advanced by and supported on a pair of spaced apart, variable diameter, sheaves which are independently movable between reduced and enlarged configurations and which result in the belt assuming different paths. A pair of rollers are rotatably mounted at fixedly spaced locations on an enlongated carrier member. One of the rollers is actively biased into engagement with the belt by a compression spring assembly. A cam surface on the carrier member proximate the other of the rollers is slidable along a fixed contoured supporting surface and passively assures engagement of the other of the rollers with the belt. As the ratio of the transmission changes with changed diameters of the sheaves and the belt thereby assumes a changed path, the belt is effective to automatically move the rollers therealong so as to maintain a substantially constant tension in the belt.

    • A bicycle is provided with an automatically variable gear ratio drive by employing a frame having a bifurcated truss rotatably supporting an axle for the rear wheel, this axle being fixed to the rear wheel for rotation therewith. A pedal assembly is positioned intermediate the wheels with a one-way clutch on the pedal assembly and a pulley is mounted on the rear wheel axle, this pulley being constituted by two laterally separated segments which are laterally moveable on the axle. A belt or chain interconnects the pedal assembly with the pulley, and an idler maintains tension on the belt or chain. The inner sides of the pulley segments are sloped and the outer side portions of the belt or chain are shaped to mate with these sloping sides so that tension on the belt or chain will cause it to move inwardly on the pulley to increase the gear ratio. Centrifugal means are provided to rotate with the axle to increase the spacing between the pulley segments with increasing bicycle speed, and this increases the gear ratio. Spring means are associated with the axle to bias the pulley segments together and thus decrease the gear ratio as the bicycle speed decreases. Means are also provided for adjusting the tension on the spring means so that the rider can vary the relationship between gear ratio and velocity to suit himself, and a second spring means which is cable adjusted is provided so that the rider can alter the gear ratio when he wishes. Lastly, means are provided for delaying the centrifugal action to facilitate starting the bicycle.

    • This invention relates to a pedal mechanism for a bicycle with variable leverage pedal cranks. Two guide pulley assemblies fixedly mounted on the frame of a bicycle each comprise two relatively rotatable members cooperating with an arrangement of a chain sprocket, a flange, pins and the pedal cranks so that the lengths of the cranks varies between minimum and maximum values during each rotation of the cranks. The chain sprocket has fifty-two teeth and a free wheel sprocket eighteen teeth, the driving ratio being 2.88. Owing to the variation in driving arm of the cranks, the power consumption can be lowered and speed can be increased up to 20% compared with conventional pedal mechanisms.

Pressure on the foot pedal by the operator increases or decreases the working length of the bicycle sprocket chain by making the effective diameter of the sprocket smaller or larger. This alters the gear ratio correspondingly. The gear ratio may be maintained without change by a locking device on the sprocket wheel in contact with the control disc.
