    • A tamper-proof, precision, torque limiting nut device is disclosed. The device comprises an inner collar member having a threaded bore to receive a bolt, stud or the like and an outer sleeve member interconnected to the collar by pins or by welds having a shear strength up to a predetermined torque value. The nut can be tightened on a bolt or stud up to the predetermined shear value, above which the pins or welds shear, to achieve tightening of the nut to the desired torque without the use of a torque wrench. Overtorquing and undertorquing are prevented, and tampering with the nut is substantially obviated.

    • An improved deformable locking fastener system comprises a fastener, a deformable collar and a dedicated installation tool. The fastener has a threaded exterior defining a plurality of axial flutes which are configured to prevent of the collar from prematurely captivating the fastener during installation. The collar comprises a cylindrical forward portion, a central portion having an elliptical cross-sectional shape and a rearward portion having an elliptical cross-sectional shape. The collar portions have axial heights selected to maximize the strength of the collar and to minimize the weight of the collar. The installation tool contacts the collar along driving ridges which reduces the radial compression of the collar and increases the tangential driving force turning the collar during installation. In addition, the installation tool includes oblique driving ridges and exit vents which prevent premature cam-off of the installation tool when generating a desired preload and swaging the collar onto the fastener to lock the components together.

    • A retainer bushing for connecting a male member such as a shaft, rod or pin, for example the coupling pin of a motor vehicle clutch pedal, to a mechanical component having a bore accepting the shaft, rod or pin in the bore, for example the input member of a hydraulic master cylinder hydraulically connected to a slave cylinder actuating a clutch release mechanism. The retainer bushing has a flange at one end and one or more longitudinally projecting tangs at the other end. Each tang, which is elastically deflectable outwardly and inwardly, has a radially inwardly directed abutment surface for engagement with the other end of the bore when the flange is engaged at one end thereof, and an inwardly radially directed prong for engagement in a groove formed in the pin. The bushing is introduced into the bore, with the tangs elastically deflected inwardly, until the tangs snap back to their original position with their abutment surface preventing removal of the bushing from the bore, and the tangs are elastically deflected outwardly when the pin is introduced through the bushing bore until each tang snaps back to its original position with its inwardly directed prong engaged in the groove in the pin.A tool permitting disassembly of the shaft, rod or pin from within the retainer bushing is also disclosed.

    • A torque indicating nut for use with a complimentary bolt. The bolt and nut assembly is utilized to join sections of electrical bus duct and the electrical conductors contained therein. The torque indicating nut comprises three sections: an engaging section, a driving section and a bridging section. The engaging section is threaded onto the complimentary portion of the previously mentioned bolt and rotated thereon to complete the assembly of adjacent sections of electrical bus duct and the conductors contained therein. When a predetermined value of torque has been reached at the driving section of the torque indicating nut, the bridging section fractures or breaks and falls away.

    • A double break-off screw fastener is described, which conceals its mode of fastening by means of a "dummy" free-floating middle shaft. The inventive screw contains three sections, a threaded section which does the actual fastening; a middle shaft section which helps to internally fasten the threaded section before breaking-off; and an outer head section which breaks from the middle shaft, thus leaving the middle shaft in a free-floating state. To the outer observer, the middle shaft is free turning giving the impression of a fastening screw. In reality, however, it is nothing more than a dummy member, which carefully conceals the well hidden internal screw thread.

    • The threads at the entrance end of a nut are interrupted by a plurality of circumferentially spaced axially extending flutes to form relatively flexible load distributing threads. The flutes extend axially across a limited number of threads and extend radially into the threads a distance short of the root of the thread. After engagement with a complimentary bolt, and upon the occurrence of a load on the connection, the interrupted threads flex axially of the nut to cushion shock on the bolt threads and shift the zone of maximum stress transfer axially inwardly of the nut, thereby materially extending fatigue life of the connection.
