    • A splice assembly is provided for connecting together a pair of belt ends by splice members having elongated tensile members such as cables or straps in a manner which allows for troughing of the belt across its width at the connected belt ends. End members are fastened to the ends of the cables or belts and the belt fasteners have slots or apertures for engageably receiving the ends members of the cables or straps, whereby the cables or straps are affixed to both of the first and second belt ends to be joined along the width of the belt ends. There is a small gap between adjacent belt fasteners which allows for flexion of the belt to allow for the aforementioned troughing of the belt. The belt splice may be provided with a support slab, which protects the cables or belts against abrasion or being snagged and which also maintains a plurality of cables or straps in spaced, generally parallel relation. The opposite ends of the support slab, from which the ends of the cables or straps protrude, are preferably curved inwardly to accommodate the leading end of the belt fasteners to shield this region from particulate sifting. The belt splices extend in a transverse direction to positions closely adjacent one another to reduce sifting of material through spaces between adjacent belt fasteners.

    • An emergency belt assembly is provided for temporary replacement of broken fan belts and the like. The assembly comprises a tubular belt made of an elastomeric material, and a connector having a shank with a plurality of barbs on each end portion thereof. The maximum outer transverse dimensions of the barbs on each end portion of the connector decrease from the axially outermost barb to the axially innermost barb, thereby permitting the connector to be easily inserted manually into the tubular ends of the belt. In an alternate embodiment, the connector articulates at a point intermediate its end portions to permit the connector to easily accommodate small radii turns. In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the connector has a plurality of barbs on one end thereof for frictionally engaging the inner surface of a tubular end of a line or belt, and has on its opposite end portion an attachment member, such as an eye, for attaching to a support object, such as a pole, wall, or the like.

    • A sheath is provided for lacing hooks and the like, and comprises a channel-shaped body having a web with flanges extending along opposite sides of the web. The sheath flanges include outwardly facing apertures in which sharpened points of the hooks are received. The web is readily deformable, so that it can be manually compressed between its opposite sides to converge the apertures, and thereby disengage the hook points received therein. The sheath may then be removed from the hooks by simply pulling the sheath outwardly from inbetween the hook points. The sheath also facilitates manually severing a strip bar-type of lacing hooks to length. The sheath is preferably constructed from a material such as stiff paper materials, cardboard, thin plastic, et cetera, which can be manually cut by a conventional knife edge, like scissors, or a pocket knife. The web covers the hook points from the exterior side of the strip, such that the sheath can be cut, and the opposite ends of the strip grasped firmly in the user's hands, and manually twisted about the welded bar which interconnects adjacent hooks to break the strip to the desired length.

    • A belt connector device for connecting opposite end portions of a belt to each other to form an endless belt assembly for use in belt type delivery apparatus comprises a mounting assembly which includes a pair of opposed, but spaced side wall members. First and second rollers are rotatably supported by the side wall members and cooperate with each other to define therebetween a gap in substantially parallel to respective axes of the first and second rollers. A drive device is operative to drivingly rotate the first roller to forcibly move, through the gap, the belt opposite end portions received in the gap with the belt opposite end portions being contact with each other in face to face relation, while clamping the belt opposite end portions between the first and second rollers, until the tension applied to the belt reaches a desired value. A locking device locks at least one of the first and second rollers against the rotation thereof to maintain the belt opposite end portions clamped between the first and second rollers, to thereby connect the belt opposite end portions to each other to form the belt into an endless loop.

    • A novel apparatus is provided for riveting belt fasteners to belts wherein a plurality of rivet assemblies are driven simultaneously while aligned and guided by elongated bores of a guide block assembly. An impact distributing driver is employed to transmit impact force from a single hammer simultaneously to a plurality of rivet assemblies held in a guide block above a belt fastener. In the preferred embodiment, all of the rivet assemblies for a particular belt fastener may be driven simultaneously. The preferred driver comprises a metal cap with a plurality of elongated metal drive rods extending downwardly therefrom to be received within the bores of the guide block assembly. The drive rods are cushioned against fracturing at their upper connections to the cap by an elastomeric cushioning material, which is preferably a polymeric plug secured in a recess in the cap. Preferably, the drive rods have upper ends force fitted into bores in the metal cap with the plug surrounding all of the drive rods and allowing the upper ends of the drive rods to flex without fracturing when non-coaxial loads are applied to the driver.

    • A steel connector for joining the steel cable ends of a conveyor belt is provided. The connector comprises a pair of tubular sleeves--one of which is slipped onto each cable end. Each sleeve has a bore having an inner section of reduced diameter relative to the outer section. The cable end is expanded radially, by driving a cone into its end, and then the expanded end is wedged tightly into the inner section of the sleeve to fix them together. Bridging members are threaded into the outer sections of the two sleeves to hold them together in lineal alignment. The bridging members are operative to permit the sleeves to flex relative to each other.
