    • The manufacture of piston rings for internal combustion engines comprises making a ring blank of which the diameter over the outer periphery is greater, and the diameter within the inner periphery is less than that required in the finished ring. A gap is cut in the ring blank to afford two free ends and the ring blank is held in a closed position by the application of a force only to each of the free ends of the ring blank. One or more ring blanks are then clamped in a closed position and machined so that the inner and outer peripheries are circular. This enables a ring to be produced which conforms very closely to a required shape and which thus, in use, provides a good seal between a piston and the associated cylinder of an internal combustion engine.

    • Apparatus and system for making positive locking sealing rings having interengagable ring end notches with mating surfaces thereof at closely precise angles of intersection. In a preferred form, interal notch end faces, and ring terminal ends, are parallel and disposed at a slight angle to the ring axis to provide a positive angular interlock between the notches in a free hooked condition. The term "free hooked" as used herein means latched but not confined in a final assembly. The rings, including notches and ring terminal ends, are formed automatically in the apparatus of the invention by a unitized multiple component or faced cutter, such as a milling cutter. The cutting surfaces and cutter unit for the angled face notch design are advanced at an angle to the ring axis equal to the angles of the notch face surfaces. The cutter element faces are so formed, disposed, and the cutter so controlled, preferably in a so-called single plunge notch cutting operation, as to insure a preserved uniform ring material section below the notch base for ring strength.The machine used includes a ring blank loading station, two cutting stations for top and bottom hook cuts, a composite unloading-hooking station, a hooked ring catcher unit, and an index unit for transfer of parts under each station. A programmable controller function to control the operating cycle. Preferably, a circular design is used, although a linear configuration is possible.

    • A method of applying a refractory coating or facing to a ferrous metal substrate that is in the form of a finished article, such as that of a piston seal or the like, and that has sections of such small dimensions as to be easily distorted by heat. The method includes an induction heating step carried out under conditions so controlled as to effect a bond of greatly improved strength in shear between the coating and substrate without, however, causing heat distortion of even the small dimensioned sections beyond functionally permissible limits. An agent capable of effecting diffusion bonding, such as free nickel, or an alloy or mixtures containing free nickel or an equivalent bonding element, is made available at the interface in the coating and substrate to facilitate the obtaining of such greatly improved bond as a result of the induction heating step. The bond obtained is in excess of 10,000 psi in shear and generally equal to or in excess of the tensile strength of the refractory coating.

    • Methods, apparatus, and improved structure having as their common basis the sequence of collapsing a piston ring in a fixture approximating engine bore diameter, and separately lapping a major portion of the ring side and a remaining locality -- narrow in width, of band size and preferably line size -- of the side of the ring while it is so collapsed, until circumferentially continuous portions of the side are flat in the range of at least about ten to five light bands. That is, out-of-flatness of the two circumferentially continuous potions, stated another way, is limited in each case to a range equivalent to about five to ten light bands at maximum, at standard inspection wave length. The broadest method disclosed is the use exclusively of rings so carefully made and so lap inspected as above on a percentage basis that the major portion of the side has all points thereon in coplanarity and the remaining locality remaining has all points thereon in coplanarity, all to a degree equivalent to the stated range to seal in respective full face contact and at least full line contact.

    • This disclosure provides a novel method of producing a channel shaped piston ring in that a plurality of relatively wide lateral slits are formed by punching together with the oil windows to save time and cost and also to avoid an ''''end effect'''' during the electrolytic Cr or Co-W plating treatment of the edge of the ring. The method is carried out by punching a sheet tape to produce the plurality of slits and windows, bending the punched tape into a channel having a C-shaped cross section, curling the C-shaped channel into a ring of larger diameter than the final piston ring, and heat treating the ring after inserting it into a hollow cylinder having an inner diameter slightly smaller than the initial diameter of the curled article. The method is further characterized in that the Cr or Co-W plating of the edges of the ring is carried out either before or after the heat treatment.
