    • The instrument has a two-piece housing and a radiation shield mounted to the flat-bottomed base of the housing. A capsule carrying a radioactive source is connected to a rotatable shaft by a flexible push-pull cable. The capsule is moved back and forth in an arcuate passage in the shield by the rotation of the shaft between a ''''safe'''' position (where there is no direct, unshielded line of sight from the outside of the housing to the source) and an ''''operate'''' position (where the source is located in an unshielded position adjacent the bottom of the housing). An actuator mounted on the shaft actuates an on-off switch so that the electrical system detecting the radiation back-scatter from the material being measured is energized only when the source is in the ''''operate'''' position. The shaft is rotated by a handle, which is also used to carry the instrument, and the source is in the ''''safe'''' position when the handle is in the carrying position.

    • Fueling systems and methods for loading radioisotopic fuel capsules provide for efficient fuel loading without contaminating the exterior surface of the fuel capsules. The systems comprise clamp means, for holding a capsule during a fueling operation, preferably having cooling means associated with the clamp means. A fueling tool receives radioisotopic fuel in microsphere form and passes the fuel into the fuel chamber through a fill opening provided by the capsule. At least one compression seal is formed between the fueling tool and the capsule to prevent undesired leakage of the microspheres. Preferably the fueling tool has a self sealing plug through which a fill tube can be passed during fueling with the tube later withdrawn to cause sealing of the plug preferably prior to removal of the fueling tool.

    • The boiler essentially comprises a vessel of revolution having an external heat-insulating covering and a radioisotope source which is housed within the vessel. The source is constituted on the one hand by two blocks of revolution formed of material which is capable of providing a good biological shield. A peripheral recess is formed in each block in order to accommodate a tightlyfitting annular member, said member being constructed of material having a radioactive absorption coefficient which is higher than that of the blocks. The source is constituted on the other hand by a charge of radioelements formed by a series of clad radioactive plates arranged in stacks. The complete radioisotope source unit is immersed in a cooling liquid. The top end-wall of the boiler proper constitutes the hermetic cover of the vessel. A safety member which is welded to the upper block and to the cover ensures falling of the vessel and of the radioisotope source in the event of dangerous overheating.
