    • An apparatus for winding a narrow belt-shaped member in zigzag around a drum. The apparatus includes a support base, and a reciprocative motion device for reciprocatively moving the support base substantially along an axis of the drum between both ends of a predetermined region to maintain the distance between the drum and the support base at a constant value. The apparatus further includes a rocking base supported by the support base rockably about a rocking axis which is a normal to the outer surface of the drum, a rocking device for rocking the rocking base, and an attaching roller supported on the rocking base rotatably about an axis substantially in parallel with the axis of the drum for urging and attaching the supplied belt-shaped member to the drum after being wound partially around the attaching roller. In winding the belt-shaped member around the drum, the rocking base and the attaching roller are rocked by means of the rocking device to cause the rotating axis of the attaching roller to intersect orthogonally a straight line in parallel with the winding direction of the member.

    • A pneumatic vehicle tire of rubber or rubber-like synthetic material. The tire has a carcass that is anchored in bead regions by being looped around inextensible bead cores. A reinforcing belt is disposed between the carcass and a tread strip. Respective bead rubber members extend around the bead regions. Respective sidewall rubber portions are disposed on laterally outer sides of the carcass and essentially extend from the bead rubber members to shoulder regions of the tire. Each of the sidewall rubber portions comprises two distinct rubber layers of different mixture compositions, namely an outer sidewall rubber layer that is resistant to the effects of ozone, is wear-resistant, and is readily moldable, and an inner sidewall rubber layer that is designed to achieve an increased transfer of forces.

    • A tire holding fixture for holding a tire for processing by a tire processing machine comprises first and second wheel half support assemblies. One of the assemblies is shiftable between an open position for permitting insertion of a tire between the assemblies, and a closed position for holding said tire between the assemblies. The first assembly includes a hollow substantially cylindrical portion having an inner surface, and the second assembly includes a spindle, having an outer surface, insertable into said hollow cylindrical portion. A plurality of detents is disposed on the inner surface of the hollow cylindrical position. A plurality of projections shiftable between a detent engaging position and a detent releasing position is disposed on the outer surface of the spindle. The projections are engagable with the detents when the outer surface of the spindle is disposed concentrically with respect to the inner surface for releasably locking the assemblies together for holding a tire for processing therebetween.

    • A mold member for use in manufacturing a closed-torus tire comprises an annular inflatable resilient member having a substantially cylindrical inner wall and a corrugated outer wall opposed thereto. At the beginning of a tire manufacturing process, the mold member is expanded from its corrugated shape into a perfect toroid. A layer of rubber is first wrapped around the toroid and then a filament or cord is wound about the rubber. Upon the completion of the winding operation, additional rubber material is molded in a toroidal shape about the filament or cord so that the cord is fully embedded in rubber. Simultaneously with the molding operation, the additional rubber material is cast to a central wheel member. After vulcanization, the mold member is deflated from the expanded toroidal shape to the original corrugated form and the mold member is retained in the tire as a run-flat component, the corrugations forming a bumpy riding surface to inform a driver that a flat has occurred.
