    • A receiver receives spread spectrum signals which include unwanted narrowband signals, for example, radio signals which comprise a mixture of signals from signal sources using the Group Special Mobile (GSM) ETSI standard coding and from signal sources using Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) coding. Both despreading of the spread spectrum signal and attenuating of predetermined frequencies (corresponding to the narrowband signal) of the spread spectrum signal are performed prior to downconverting. In another approach to decoding a spread spectrum signal in which an unwanted narrowband signal has been coded using a coding scheme with error correction capabilities, the narrowband signal is decoded, regenerated and subtracted prior to despreading of the spread spectrum signal.

    • An array antenna reception apparatus includes an array antenna, K adaptive receivers, and demodulated signal synthesizer. Each adaptive receiver receives reception signals from the M antenna elements for a corresponding sector, independently forms a directional pattern having a gain in a desired signal direction for the sector, receives a desired signal, and suppresses an interference signal. The demodulated signal synthesizer receives K demodulated signals as outputs from the K adaptive receivers, weights and synthesizes the signals, and outputs a demodulated signal for a user.

    • In a mobile communication system, independent versions of a signal are transmitted over plural antennas. The antennas are either spatially separated or orthogonally polarized with respect to each other so that the independent versions of the signal are not subjected to correlated fading. Each independent version of the signal is transmitted from a respective antenna a fixed delay after transmission of a previous version of a signal from a different antenna. The fixed delay is at least one information bit of the signal. Received versions of the signal are equalized in an equalizer or RAKE architecture to provide a composite signal. The equalizer has respective sets of equalizer taps that are separated from adjacent sets of equalizer taps by the fixed delay. The RAKE architecture has respective sets of RAKE fingers that are separated from adjacent sets of RAKE fingers by the fixed delay.

A RAKE and space-diversity combiner combines, for each respective chip-sequence signal, a respective plurality of detected spread-spectrum signals and a respective multiplicity of detected-multipath-spread-spectrum signals, to generate a plurality of combined signals. The symbol amplitudes can be measured and erasure decoding employed to improve performance.

    • Multi-path effects are common in mobile communications. When coupled with spread-spectrum signals utilizing spreading code sequences, detection of more than one multi-path signal becomes a necessity in order to output a clean signal with little loss. In accord with the invention, a spread-spectrum sliding matched-filter searcher system comprises a partial matched-filter that receives the input spread-spectrum signal. The searcher matches samples of the input signal with a tap length m of the reference code and produces a first correlation value. The first correlation value is compared to a first threshold. When it equals or exceeds the first threshold, the first correlation value is integrated to produce a second correlation value. This second value is compared with a second threshold, which if met signifies the detection of the multi-path signal. The process is repeated until all significant multi-path signals are detected. This design of the present invention is flexible in nature because the searcher can be programmed to act like a matched-filter, a correlator, or a combination of both while significantly improving the search time and reducing the amount of hardware and complexity characteristic of a matched-filter.
