    • There is described a passive variable emittance device comprising: a substrate having a receiving surface adapted to reflect radiations having a given wavelength; an intermediary layer deposited on the receiving surface of the substrate and being substantially transparent to the radiations having the given wavelength; and a thermochromic layer deposited on top of the intermediary layer, the thermochromic layer being substantially transparent to the radiations having the given wavelength for a first temperature below a given transition temperature, and presenting both reflection and absorption for the radiations for a second temperature above the given transition temperature, a total optical thickness for the intermediary and thermochromic layers being substantially equal to one quarter of the given wavelength so that radiations reflected by the thermochromic layer at the second temperature destructively interfere with radiations transmitted by the thermochromic and intermediary layers and reflected by the substrate in order to obtain a first emittance for the passive variable emittance device at the second temperature being greater than a second emittance for the passive variable emittance device at the first temperature.

    • A liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes a liquid crystal panel (20) having an area sensor function of detecting the position of an input from an outside source by detecting an image on a panel surface. The liquid crystal panel (20) (position detecting section), provided with visible light sensors (31A) each containing light sensor elements (30) that detect the intensity of received visible light and infrared light sensors (31B) each containing light sensor elements (30) that detect the intensity of received infrared light, which detects an input position by the visible light sensors (31A) and the infrared light sensors (31B) separately detecting an image on the detector surface. The liquid crystal display device further includes a backlight (light-emitting section) for irradiating the liquid crystal panel (20) with light containing infrared light. This achieves an area sensor capable of accurate position detection in a wide range of environmental illuminances and a liquid crystal display device equipped with such an area sensor.

    • A night vision compatible backlight is disclosed. The backlight may include a base layer and a spacer layer. The spacer layer defines a plurality of arrays of openings, each includes a first set of openings and a second set of openings alternately distributed along the array. The backlight also includes a first set of LED modules electronically connected to the base layer through the first set of openings and a second set of LED modules electronically connected to the base layer through the second set of openings. The backlight further includes a filtering layer for providing infrared filtering for the second set of LED modules. The first set of LED modules and the second set of LED modules may be selectively energized to provide: a first mode where the first set of LED modules are energized, and a second mode where only the second set of LED modules are energized.
