    • Methods for determining the location of a satellite positioning system receiver by determining an estimated location of the receiver (200), transmitting the estimated location of the receiver to a network, determining a reference altitude of the receiver at the network based upon the estimated location of the receiver (210), and determining a new location of the receiver based upon the reference altitude of the receiver (220). In some embodiments, terrain slope is determined at the estimated location for use in updating the estimated location. In some embodiments, satellite information and weighting factors used to estimate receiver location along with other parameters are utilized to update the estimated location.

    • The present invention relates to a method for calculating the instantaneous characteristics of a satellite in orbit equipped with a GNSS receiver, capable of performing measurements of pseudo-distance, when fewer than four transmitters are simultaneously in visibility. This method comprises the following stages: a first stage (20) of pre-processing of quantities measured by the receiver to deliver measurements of pseudo-distance, pseudo-speed and instantaneous pseudo-accelerations; a second stage (21) of mathematically processing these measurements, enhanced by the knowledge of complementary data concerning the orbit of the receiver satellite and the receiver, delivering several solutions, a third stage (22) of physically filtering these solutions delivering the position and the speed of the receiver satellite as well as the clock bias and drift of the receiver.

    • The portable device (10) is used for determining horizontal and vertical positions. It includes a pressure sensor altimeter (15) calibrated to a predetermined initial altitude, a GPS signal receiver (12) arranged to receive, via an antenna (11), signals originating from several satellites (20) in order to calculate position data of the device, a processing unit (14) receiving the position data from the receiver (12) and an altitude value from the altimeter (15), and display means (16) for the horizontal and vertical positions of the device processed and provided by the processing unit. The processing unit sends the GPS receiver a signal corresponding to the altitude value of the calibrated altimeter to enable the receiver to determine, using the altitude value, the position data of the device. A memory (13) including cartographic data and associated with the GPS receiver (12) can provide the precise data to the processing unit (14) in particular for calibrating the altimeter.
