    • A perforated filmstrip transportation and registration system (100) and method provide a substrate in the form of a rotating drum (104) with vacuum holes (106) to allow an internally produced vacuum to act upon an engaged filmstrip (102). The rotating drum (104) has a number of registration-tension pin pair assemblies (216) that register and subsequently advance a filmstrip (102) at the 3 o'clock position in a registration mode (FIGS. 2 and 3), and are ready to be inserted in filmstrip perforations (208) when they approach the 3 o'clock position in a load mode (FIG. 4). The registration-tension pin pair assemblies (216) each contain a registration pin (220) and a tension pin (230) which are sized small enough to fit into filmstrip perforations (208) without interference, and which move away and towards each other in the nature of scissors blades in the preferred embodiment. In the registration mode, a side of the registration pin (220) rests against a side of one perforation, while the tension pin (230) engaged in an adjacent perforation, places the filmstrip (102) in tension by moving away from the registration pin (220). In the load mode, the tension pin (230) moves toward the registration pin (220) so that distance therebetween allows both pins to be easily inserted into prospective adjacent filmstrip perforations (208). In the preferred embodiment, the registration and tension pins (220, 230) are part of pin bodies (222, 232) which are spring loaded and activated via interaction with cam surfaces (260, 262).

    • A method and apparatus are provided for preparing discrete blanks from a wound strip comprising a plurality of connected blanks. Each blank has a determined separation point and a marker at a determined distance from the determined separation point for making soft-type wrappers. First, the wound strip is unwound under tension. Next, at least a section of a particular blank of the unwound strip is cut and any other milling and preparatory steps are performed by appropriate rollers and mechanisms. The tension of the unwound strip is slackened periodically, e.g., via chocking these rollers, and the unwound strip is realigned relative to the marker of the particular blank during this slackening, e.g, by identifying the marker via a sensor and driving the strip via rollers. The particular blank of the realigned strip is separated at the determined separation point of the particular blank to separate the particular blank from the realigned strip.

    • A register control for web processing apparatus operates to match the surface speed of a metering roll which supplies a preprinted web to a cutting zone in a cutter mechanism to the surface speed of an impression cylinder which applies impressions and associated register marks to said web. The register control also effects registration between the impressions and the cutting zone. The web processing apparatus comprises a register control motor for the metering roll and a movable dance engageable with the web at a location between the impression cylinder and the said metering roll. The register control comprises base speed selector means and circuits for operating the register control motor to establish and maintain a base speed for the web; error correction sensors and circuits for ascertaining a register error, if any, and for adjusting the base speed to establish a corrected base speed to eliminate the register errror; dancer position locater sensors and circuits for ascertaining and remembering a null position assumed by the dancer when the web is operating at corrected base speed; and for subsequently recalling the null position to enable an initial or start-up operation of the register control motor at a speed wherein the dancer assumes the recalled null position when the web is engaged with the dancer.

    • An apparatus for selectively feeding tape having label patterns printed on it at one of two different speeds to maintain alignment of the label patterns with a downstream device such as a cutter for severing the tape between label patterns. Marks on the tape associated with the individual label patterns are monitored by a sensor to detect misalignment of the tape. The tape is fed between a driven feed drum and a spring biased pressure drum. The feed drum is mounted on a main shaft. A drive shaft extends parallel to the main shaft. A pair of gears are mounted on each of the shafts and each gear meshes with one of the gears on the other shaft to form two separate power transmission paths. The sizes of the gears are selected so that the gear ratios of the two power transmission paths are different. The gears on the main shaft are selectively fixed to the main shaft for rotation with it by electromagnetic clutches controlled by the sensor. The speed of the main shaft, the feed drum, and, thus, the tape is varied between the two speeds in response to the sensor output by disengagement of one of the clutches and engagement of the other.

    • For accurate positioning of a web of material which is to be transported stepwise by at least first and second feed means through processing stations disposed therebetween, the feed means are controlled by a programmable computer which stores a value representative of the length of the distance to be covered by the web during a transportation step. The tension of the web is measured and the measured value is compared to a reference value stored in the computer. If the actual value deviates from the reference value the drive means of at least one of the web feed means is controlled in such a way that the tension in the web is at least substantially adjusted to the reference value by increasing or reducing the length of the portion of web which in a transportation step is drawn into the processing region between the web feed means.
