    • A method for making a multi-layer blow molded container (10), the multi-layer preform (10′) from which the container is blow molded, and the apparatus (53) for making a liner (24) of the preform utilizes thermoforming of a heated sheet (34) of resin. A vacuum is drawn within a vacuum enclosure (54) that is heated between a pair of spaced heaters (52). A first surface of the heated sheet of resin (34) and a male vacuum mold (56) engages the other surface of the heated sheet of resin which has a concave shape to provide the forming in a manner that prevents crystallinity of the lower freestanding base of the multi-layer container that is ultimately blow molded from the preform (10′) made with the thermoformed liner (24).

    • A container closure locking assembly (40) includes a plastic container (42) having a body portion (54) for holding the contents, a lower closed end (56) for supporting the container (42), and an upper dispensing end (58). The upper dispensing end (58) includes a neck (60) and a round dispensing spout (64) having a central axis (A). The dispensing spout (64) extends upwardly from the neck (60) and further includes an external closure thread (68), a retaining flange (70), and a rotational positioning formation (72). A plastic lock ring (44) molded separately from the container (42) extends around and is supported by the neck (60) of the upper dispensing end (58) of the container (42) below the external closure threads (68) of the dispensing spout (64). The lock ring (44) includes retainers (82 and 84) to secure the lock ring (44) to the container (42) and at least one external lock (98) having a lock surface (100) and an unlocking actuator (102) for moving the lock surface (100) radially inward with manual movement. The lock ring (44) also includes a rotational positioning formation (96) to rotatively position the lock ring (44) about the central axis (A) of the dispensing spout (64). A closure (46) having an internal thread (110) is threaded onto the external thread (68) of the dispensing spout (64) of the container (42) to secure the closure (46) and close the container (42). The closure (46) has at least one internal lock (112) designed to engage the outer curved ramp surface (100) of the external lock (98) of the lock ring (44) to prevent unthreading rotation of the closure (46) from the dispensing spout (64). The lock surface (116) of the internal lock (112) of the closure (46) may be disengaged from the lock surface (100) of the external lock (98) of the lock ring (44) by inward manual movement of unlocking actuators (102).

    • A plastic blow molded container (10) is disclosed as including a freestanding base structure (20) that is constructed with a plurality of alternating hollow legs 22 and curved ribs (34), and a hub (41) from which the legs and ribs extend radially with a construction that provides good stability against tipping as well as the capability of withstanding internal pressure. Each rib (34) has an outer upper end (36) with a circumferential width W.sub.u and an inner lower end (38) with a circumferential width W.sub.l that is greater than the circumferential width W.sub.u of the upper rib end so the lower rib end is capable of resisting stress cracking. An intermediate rib portion (40) of a curved shape tapers between the ends with an included angle B in the range of about 1.degree. to 8.degree. and preferably about 2.degree..

    • A dispensing closure assembly (14) for use with a plastic blow molded container (12) is disclosed as including a dispensing member (20) that is adapted to be fixedly mounted on an upper open end (18) of the blow molded container and also includes a closure member (22) rotatably mounted on the dispensing member for movement between fill and dispensing positions. Dispensing member (20) and closure member (22) of the closure assembly each have an associated fill opening (26, 28) that are aligned in the fill position to fill the interior (24) of the closure assembly upon inversion of the container, and the fill openings are unaligned with each other in the dispensing position to close the upper open end of the container. Dispensing member (20) and closure member (22) also each have an associated dispensing opening (32, 34) that are unaligned in the fill position so the liquid contents received from the container then remain within the interior (24) of the closure assembly, and the dispensing openings are aligned with each other in the dispensing position of the closure member to permit dispensing of liquid contents within the closure assembly.
