    • Calls are established with a single mobile terminal through either a wireless network or via a terminal adaptor over the PSTN or a packet network. The terminal adaptor and mobile terminal communicate via a local wireless interface. The mobile terminal may facilitate cellular calls via the wireless network as well as PSTN or packet-based calls via the terminal adaptor. The mobile terminal may initiate a handoff when it is involved in a call through the wireless network and within a communication zone of the terminal adaptor. The handoff will establish a connection between the wireless switch, which is currently supporting the call, and the mobile terminal through the terminal adaptor. Once the connection with the mobile terminal through the terminal adaptor is established, the call is transitioned to the new connection and the mobile terminal will transfer to the local wireless interface to support the call.

    • The present invention relates to a system and method for provisioning dynamic high usage trunk groups between end offices in a switched telephone network. The system includes a transit trunk subnetwork with ATM facilities connected between the end offices. A call manager communicates with the end offices and the ATM facilities to process signal messages from the end offices, and send corresponding messages to interfaces between the end offices and ATM facilities. The interfaces are configured to dynamically set up and release switched virtual circuits in response to signal messages from the end offices or the call manager. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, an element manager in the end offices is configured to receive signal messages from the call manager to dynamically provision high usage trunks between the end offices.

    • A method and apparatus for automatic callback used in an Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN). The system is particularly useful in the Personal Computer (PC) environment for guaranteed use of the next available channel to one of the modems of an Internet Services Provider (ISP). This invention makes use of the existing Automatic Call Back (ACB) feature designed for voice calls, to PC modem dial-up calls. In a specific example, the apparatus, that can be in the form of an Service Control Point (SCP) keeps in a table entries of unsuccessful communication attempts between modems and a called party, such as an ISP, as a result of a busy line condition on the ISP side. When the busy line condition ceases, the SCP issues the necessary control signals in the network to cause the Service Switching Point servicing a modem to notify the modem to re-dial. When the modem goes off-hook, the SSP applies dial tone. The modem that is invited to re-try establishing a communication attempt is selected from the table in the SCP. A possible selection strategy is to look at the oldest entry.

    • The present invention allows different types of communication applications to cooperate with an associated communication client to facilitate communications having a defined quality of service. The communication client may establish an authorized virtual circuit having a defined quality of service through a network using a first session establishment protocol on behalf of the communication application. Once the authorized virtual circuit is established, the communication application may establish one or more communication sessions, which may support different types of multimedia services, through the virtual connection. In one embodiment, the virtual connection extends through the local access network, which may be supported by an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). The communication client may use the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as the first session establishment protocol to establish the virtual circuit through the local access network.
