    • The present invention relates to a system and method for provisioning dynamic high usage trunk groups between end offices in a switched telephone network. The system includes a transit trunk subnetwork with ATM facilities connected between the end offices. A call manager communicates with the end offices and the ATM facilities to process signal messages from the end offices, and send corresponding messages to interfaces between the end offices and ATM facilities. The interfaces are configured to dynamically set up and release switched virtual circuits in response to signal messages from the end offices or the call manager. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, an element manager in the end offices is configured to receive signal messages from the call manager to dynamically provision high usage trunks between the end offices.

    • A hybrid central office for serving a plurality of subscriber lines while serving as a virtual access tandem to a subnetwork of central offices having a connection to an ATM backbone network is described. The hybrid central office includes a computing module having a messaging interface to the ATM network, an inter-working trunk interface to the ATM network and a trunk connection to the PSTN. The hybrid central office serves as a tandem switch for other central offices connected to the subnetwork. Other central offices are preferably connected to the subnetwork by a signal large trunk group. All inter-office call routing is therefore handled by the hybrid central office. The hybrid central office also provides a gateway to the PSTN. Inter-office calls originated and terminated within the subnetwork are set up by the virtual access tandem but after call set up, the virtual access tandem is not involved in the call. The advantage is the utilization of spare processing capacity in a central office to off-load inter-office trunking congestion, as well as a significant reduction in trunking maintenance costs.

    • A method and apparatus for completing telephone calls between trunk subnetworks overlaid on an ATM backbone is described. Each of the trunk subnetworks include a call manager which is configured for exchanging signaling messages with both a common channel signaling network and the ATM backbone network. This permits ATM facility providers to link subnetworks using a common infrastructure so that calls can be effectively diverted from the PSTN between end offices while fully supporting PSTN/ISDN services. This is achieved by using a signaling method in which call request messages are encoded by a first call manager with a parameter so that a second call manager in the signaling path can effect backward call set up between ATM interfaces using data from the parameter. The advantage is the extension of call completion between subnetworks overlaid on an ATM backbone using ATM facilities without sacrificing PSTN/ISDN call features.

    • The present invention provides call processing for an incoming call based on the relative location of the user for which the call is intended. If the user is at a certain location, the incoming call is routed to one or more telephony devices associated with the user or location based on whether the user is at the location. If the user has multiple telephony devices associated with a given location and the user is at that location, an incoming call may be routed to one or more of the telephony devices. If the user is not at the location, the incoming call may proceed in normal course or may be processed as desired based on the user not being at the location. Different telephony devices may be associated with different locations, and different call processing rules may be implemented based on the location of the user.

    • The present invention allows mobile terminals to receive location-based information upon entering a local wireless zone established by an access point. The access point includes or is associated with one or more servers, which may provide the location-based information and control access. The local wireless zone is a limited area in which communications between the access point and the mobile terminal are possible. Once the mobile terminal enters into one or more local wireless zones, the presence of the mobile terminal in the local wireless zone is detected. Once detected, the mobile terminal is afforded access to a server on which the location-based information is stored. The server is associated with the local wireless zone.
