    • A shift lever assembly for a vehicle is provided. The shift lever assemblyncludes a vertically oriented detent plate having a Z-shaped slot defining a 2-wheel-drive (2H) position, a 4-wheel-drive (4H) position, a neutral (N) position, and a 4-wheel-drive low-speed (4L) position. An actuator pivotally mounts to the detent plate and transfer case, the actuator including a first arm including a connector adapted to connect to a shift mechanism on a vehicle transfer case, and a second arm. A lever subassembly pivotally mounts to the actuator second arm and includes a detent pin adapted for movement in the Z-shaped slot. The lever subassembly is biased so that the detent pin engages the Z-shaped slot. As the lever subassembly is moved along a first path, it drives the connector on the actuator along a corresponding second path to shift the shifting mechanism. The Z-shaped slot and detent pin cooperate along with the actuator and lever subassembly to allow the operator to shift the lever from the 2H position through the 4H and N positions to the 4L position with a continuous "pull-down" type motion by the operator, which motion is ergonomical and readily performable by the operator, but which motion prevents accidentally "crashing-through" the positions from 2H through 4H and N positions to the 4L position.

    • Herein disclosed is a shift fork lubricating system for use in a transmission of the type in which shift forks (4.sub.1, 4.sub.3) have their bearing portions (10.sub.1, 10.sub.3) slidably fitted and supported on a shift fork shaft (2) and their forked pawl portions (6.sub.1, 6.sub.3) formed at their leading ends for engagement with circumferential grooves (8.sub.1, 8.sub.2) of shift gears (7.sub.1, 7.sub.3) so that the shift gears (7.sub.1, 7.sub.3) are shifted by the sliding controls of the shift forks (4.sub.1, 4.sub.3). The bearing portions (10.sub.1, 10.sub.3) of the shift forks (4.sub.1, 4.sub.3) have their inner circumferences formed at their center areas with annular oil grooves (16.sub.1, 16.sub.3), respectively, which are axially elongated and always in communication with oil ports (14.sub.1, 14.sub.3) opened to the outer circumference of the shift fork shaft (2). The shift forks (4.sub.1, 4.sub. 3) have their inner circumferences formed at both the sides of the annular oil grooves (16.sub.1, 16.sub.3) with pairs of sliding faces (17.sub.1, 17.sub.3 ; 18.sub.1, 18.sub.3) which have a substantially equal axial length and which are made slidable on the shift fork shaft (2). The shift forks (4.sub.1, 4.sub.3) are further formed therein with oil passages (15.sub.1, 15.sub.3) which are opened into the forked pawl portions (6.sub.1, 6.sub.3) thereof and which communicate with the annular oil grooves (16.sub.1, 16.sub.3).

    • An improved drum type switch-over mechanism for a speed change device including a speed change pedal shaft and a speed change drum both of which are rotatably supported in axial alignment with one another on a transmission case and which are operatively connected to one another by way of an intermittent feed mechanism so as to allow the speed change drum to be rotated by a unit angle in a predetermined direction on every reciprocatable rotation of the pedal shaft by a predetermined angle. The improvement consists in that the pedal shaft is located in axial alignment with an input shaft of the intermittent feed mechanism, that a sun gear is formed on the input shaft while a plurality of planet gears are mounted on the pedal shaft for meshing engagement with the sun gear, and that a ring gear meshing with the planet gears is firmly fixed to the transmission case. This arrangement of the switch-over mechanism enables the pedal shaft, the input shaft and the speed change drum to be disposed within a limited space, realizing a very compact structure of the switch-over mechanism, a substantial reduction of its mounting space and smaller design dimensions of the speed change device.

    • A gear shifting mechanism comprising a drive shaft with a plurality of freely rotatable gears mounted thereon and means for making driving connection between the drive shaft and any one of the gears. Then through the operation of means actuated by limited reverse rotation of the drive shaft, the connection of the drive shaft is shifted to a second gear while the first gear is released. The shifting of the connection of the drive shaft successively to all of the other gears is accomplished in the same manner, namely, by stopping the drive shaft and reversing its rotation through a limited angle which movement actuates means for connecting the next gear to the drive shaft while releasing the previously connected gear. This procedure is continuously repeated, shifting the connection with the drive shaft progressively through all of the gears in a predetermined sequence and then returning the connection to the first gear.
