    • Significant improvements in papermaking control can be achieved by employing an array of sensors that are positioned underneath the wire of the machine to measure the conductivity of the aqueous wet stock. The conductivity of the wet stock is directly proportional to the total water weight within the wet stock; consequently, the sensor provides information which can be used to monitor and control the quality of the paper sheet produced. Because CD water weight profile is obtained practically instantaneously, the MD and CD variations are essentially decoupled. Quality improvements to the sheet fabricated will be achieved by providing fast control of the actuators on the machine and by tuning components on the machine to eliminate the sources of variations. Further, the dry stock weight of a sheet of wet stock that is resting on a water permeable moving wire of the papermaking machine can be made employing a water weight sensor element that is positioned adjacent to the wire and that generates signals indicative of the water weight of the sheet of wet stock on the wire. Moreover, the moisture level cross-direction (CD) profile of a sheet of material that is produced can also be measured.

    • A papermaking machine including a forming section for forming a paper web, a press section for pressing water from the paper web, and a dryer for drying the paper web is disclosed. The dryer includes a wet end for drying the paper web to at least about 60 percent solids and a dry end for further drying the paper web. The dry end includes at least one series of alternating dryer cylinders and vacuum rolls. A dryer felt transports the paper web as the dryer felt travels about each dryer cylinder and each vacuum roll of the series. In one disclosed embodiment, at least one of the vacuum rolls receives a vacuum of at least about one inch water column (1.5 kilo-pascals, "kPa") to restrain the web as it dries. A method for manufacturing a paper web while restraining it by using the dryer apparatus described above is also disclosed. Drying the paper web under restraint in the dry end of the dryer can substantially reduce cross-machine direction shrinkage and stretch of the web, reduce edge curl, and have other substantial benefits.

    • The invention relates to a device and method in a paper machine for guiding a web and in particular in guiding a leader of the web. The device operates in a paper machine in the area between a center roll of the press section and a separate press nip in the press section. The separate press nip is formed between a smooth-faced upper roll and a hollow-faced lower roll. Around this lower roll, a lower felt of the separate press is placed and runs from a suction-transfer roll placed at the proximity of the center roll as a straight run into the separate press nip. At the initial end of the straight run of the felt of the separate press nip, in connection with the guide roll, air-transfer devices are arranged, by whose means a reduced pressure is produced at least across the width of the leader in connection with a closing inlet nip between the felt and the leader and/or in connection with an opening outlet nip defined between the guide roll and the straight run of the felt.

    • A dryer section employs top-felted and bottom-felted dryer sections each comprised of a single steam-heated drying cylinder with a diameter of about 12 feet. The web is transferred between drying cylinders by a two vacuum roll transfer without an open draw. The dryer fabric wrap on the large dryer cylinders is over 270 degrees resulting in large drying capability per dryer roll. Because each large dryer is followed by another large dryer roll which dries the opposite side of the web, uniformity of drying is maintained. Each dryer cylinder may have its own dryer fabric stretcher and guides. Alternatively, individual dryer fabrics service multiple top-felted dryers and bottom-felted dryers respectively. The web is constrained approximately 96 percent of the time as it passes through the is dryer section.
