    • A boat propulsion unit adapted to be suspended on the outside of a boat transom and drivably connected to an engine on the inside of the transom. This unit comprising a propeller drive shaft housing, a suspension arrangement adapted to be fixedly secured to the transom, a pivot which pivotally connects the drive shaft housing to the suspension arrangement to allow pivotal displacement of the drive shaft housing relative to the suspension arrangement about a pivot axis in a vertical plane and pivot axis in a horizontal plane, a steering device which is arranged to effect pivotal displacement of the drive shaft housing about the first-mentioned axis, and a trim and tilt device which is arranged to effect pivotal displacement of the drive shaft housing about the second-mentioned axis. The pivot comprises a first lower and a second upper universal joint (22, 24 resp.), of which the upper universal joint carries a powered actuator member (35) inclined to the horizontal and comprising a pair of components (34, 37) which are telescopically displaceable relative to each other and of which one has a forked bracket (39) at an outer end, which bracket (39) grips an upper region (38) of the drive shaft housing (3) and is pivotally connected thereto for pivotal displacement about a horizontal pivot axis. The other component (34) of the actuator member (35) has an inner end at a distance from the upper universal joint, and at, or in the vicinity of, which end the other component has structure (42) for connecting the component to a steering mechanism, by which the actuator member is displaceable about a pivot axis (a) lying in a vertical plane, thereby to pivot the drive shaft housing relative to the suspension arrangement.

    • An outboard engine assembly has a stern bracket adapted to be fixed to a boat body, a swivel case vertically swingably supported on the stern bracket, an engine body laterally swingably supported on the swivel case, and a tilt cylinder device disposed between the stern bracket and the swivel case. The outboard engine assembly has a corrosion-resistant mechanism comprising a first anodic metal element attached to a lower portion of the engine body, a second anodic metal element attached to a submersible portion of the stern bracket, a first electric connecting circuit by which the first and second anodic metal elements are electrically connected to each other, and a second electric connecting circuit branched from the first electric connecting circuit and connecting the first electric connecting circuit to the tilt cylinder device. The tilt cylinder device comprises a cylinder unit actuatable by a pressurized fluid supplied from a pressure fluid supply. The cylinder unit is disposed substantially centrally in a planar region defined by the swivel case and lying parallel to a tilt shaft pivotally connecting the case and the swivel bracket. The pressure fluid supply is divided and disposed on both sides of the cylinder unit. The tilt cylinder device comprises a cylinder coupled to the swivel case, a piston rod coupled to the stern bracket. The outboard engine assembly has a damage preventing mechanism for allowing relative movement of the cylinder and the piston rod when the engine body is subjected to an excessive external force.

    • A marine propulsion device includes a support adapted to be attached to a boat hull and a propulsion assembly including a propeller adapted to be driven by an engine. The propulsion assembly is connected to the support for vertical pivotal movement relative thereto and a hydraulic tilt cylinder and piston assembly is connected at one end to the support and has a second end connected to the propulsion assembly. The piston is movable toward the other end of the cylinder when the one end is pressurized to tilt the propulsion assembly upwardly. At least one trim cylinder is fixed relative to the support and includes a trim piston reciprocally mounted on the cylinder and releasably engageable with the propulsion assembly. Actuation of the propeller while the propulsion assembly is tilted upwardly is operative to force the propulsion assembly downwardly against the piston. A valve is operable when the piston is forced toward the one end of the cylinder to vent hydraulic fluid from the one end of the cylinder and an orifice is provided for controlling the flow rate of fluid through the valve to prevent the rapid descent of the propulsion assembly.
