    • A system for optimizing the speed of a boat at a paticular throttle setting utilizes sensed speed changes to vary the boat drive unit position vertically and to vary the drive unit trim position. The measurement of boat speed before and after an incremental change in vertical position or trim is used in conjunction with a selected minimum speed change increment to effect subsequent alternate control strategies. Depending on the relative difference in before and after speeds, the system will automatically continue incremental movement of the drive unit in the same direction, hold the drive unit in its present position, or move the drive unit an incremental amount in the opposite direction to its previous position. The alternate control strategies minimize the effects of initial incremental movement in the wrong direction, eliminate excessive position hunting by the system, and minimize drive unit repositioning which has little or no practical effect on speed.

    • Several embodiments of marine outboard drives including devices for protecting the unit in the event of tilting up more than a predetermined extent. The protection devices slow the engine when the outboard drive is tilted up more than the predetermined amount. This may be done by interrupting the spark, retarding the spark advance or closing a throttle. The invention is disclosed in combination with either an outboard motor having an underwater inlet for cooling the engine or an outboard drive portion of an inboard-outboard drive having a stabilizer for holding the outboard drive during a portion of its trim adjusted movement.

    • A steering structure for a ship propelling device includes: a support member for supporting the body of the ship propelling device on a hull; a universal joint for connecting between a drive shaft connected to a drive source and an input shaft of the ship propelling device; a vertically driving means adapted to cause the body to vertically pivot about a pivot shaft; and a turning driving means adapted to cause the body to pivot about an axis orthogonal to the axis of the pivot shaft. The vertically driving means and the body are connected together through a link mechanism. Such arrangement makes it possible to turn the whole of the ship propelling device independently of any vertical movement thereof, contributing to reduction of the production cost and a stable steering operation of the propelling device.
