    • An improved quick connect coupling is provided for releasably connecting a pair of conduits, such as ordinary garden hose. The coupling comprises interlocking male and female fittings adapted for respective connection to a pair of hoses, wherein the male fitting includes a male member with an external circumferential groove for axial alignment with a generally opposed pair of arcuate slots in a female member on the female fitting. A C-shaped retainer is carried about the female fitting and includes a central spring base supporting a pair of locking arms which terminate in free ends having axially projecting lock tabs at the radially inner edges thereof, wherein these locking arms extend through the arcuate slots to position the arm free ends in engagement with radially oriented cam surfaces on the female member. In a normal unstressed condition of the retainer, the radially inner edges of the locking arms including the lock tabs extend into the male member groove to lock the coupling. When the coupling is subjected to water pressure, slight axial displacement of the male and female fittings move the lock tabs into locking engagement with the inner diameter surface of the female fitting thereby preventing retainer expansion and resultant inadvertent coupling disconnection. When the water pressure is turned off, however, the retainer spring base can be pushed radially inwardly to displace the locking arm free ends along the cam surfaces and outwardly from the male member groove to unlock the coupling.

    • A coupling includes at least one thin-walled sleeve which forms an axially extending defining wall of a substantially annular chamber. The chamber is arranged to be supplied with a pressure medium to elastically deform said sleeve in a radial direction into clamping engagement with a surface on an element which is to be connected to the coupling, the shape and dimension of said surface substantially corresponding to the shape and dimension of a surface on the sleeve remote from said chamber. The chamber has extending therefrom a channel arrangement which is arranged to cooperate with coupling-release means which can be activated by relative movement between said surfaces, or by a given torsional deformation thereof, to a state in which pressure medium can flow through said channel arrangement from said chamber to relieve the chamber of pressure acting therein.

    • A leakage preventive mechanism for flexible hoses through which is transferred fluid under a high pressure is disclosed. The mechanism comprises a rib made integral with a nipple portion of a nipple flange and circumferentially extending around said nipple portion. An end of a reinforcing layer embedded in the flexible hose passes over the rib and is wrapped around a bead wire arranged near the rib to form an inclined turn-back portion. A pair of rings are urged against the inclined turn-back portion of the reinforcing layer by means of bolts, whereby the inclined turn-back portion of the reinforcing layer functions as a packing for preventing the fluid from passing over the rib.

    • A coupling for connecting a supply conduit to a rigid or flexible extension tube, designed to carry a fluid under pressure, comprises a cylindrical housing having one end wall fastened to the conduit and another end wall formed with an opening for the insertion of an extremity of the tube. The inserted tube extremity is closely surrounded, within the housing, by one or more dished springs which can be deformed under axial pressure from an adjoining annular thrust member when the tube is filled with fluid; the pressure of the fluid may act upon the thrust member through an elastic ring, embracing the tube extremity which shifts relatively to the housing under such pressure, or directly through a gap behind that member which then operates as a piston forming a socket for the tube. The dished spring or springs are peripherally subdivided into coherent ring segments by radial slits facilitating the deformation of the spring which, by contracting under the applied axial pressure, grips the tube and prevents its extraction from the housing; this gripping action may be maintained, after reduction of the fluid pressure, by an indexing of the thrust member in its axially shifted position. Decoupling is possible by a reverse shifting of the tube to relax the dished spring or springs.
