    • Substituted o-cyanobenzoic acid esters of the formula

      WHEREIN A denotes an alkyl or aralkyl group, Hal denotes a chlorine or bromine atom, Y1 denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom or a SO2 group, R represents a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group if Y1 denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom, and R represents an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group if Y1 denotes a SO2 group, Z denotes a hydrogen atom, n denotes the number 0 to 3, m denotes the number 1 to 4 and p denotes the number 0 to 2, and the sum of m+n+p must not exceed 4, are novel and useful intermediates for dyestuffs. They are obtained in that a halogenocyanobenzoic acid derivative of the formula

      WHEREIN X denotes an ammonium, alkyl or aralkyl group and the remaining symbols have the abovementioned meaning, is reacted in a hydrophilic organic solvent with a compound of the formula RYMe, wherein Me denotes an alkali metal atom and R and Y have the abovementioned meaning and, if X denotes an ammonium group, the resulting reaction product is esterified.

      WHEREIN R IS A RADICAL SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF HYDROGEN AND METHYL, X IS HALOGEN SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF BROMINE AND CHLORINE AND Y IS A RADICAL SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF

      -CN, -COOH AND -COO-CH3

      WHEREIN AN AQUEOU SILUTION CONTAINING DISODIUM HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE IS CHARGED TO A REACTOR ALONG WITH AN ALPHA,-BETA-DIHALOPROPIONIC COMPOUND AS DEFINED ABOVE, AND WHEREIN THE REACTOR IS HEATED AT A TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 60-110*C., AND WHEREIN AN ALPHA-HALOACRYLIC COMPOUND IS PRODUCED AND COLLECTED IN THE VAPORS COMING FROM THE REACTOR, AND WHEREIN BYPRODUCT SODIUM DIHYDROGEN PHOSPHATE AND SODIUM HALIDE ARE FORMED, THE IMPROVEMENT COMPRISING ADDING SODIUM HYDROXIDE TO THE REACTION MIXTURE AT A RATE SUFFICIENT TO MAINTAIN A SOLUTION OF DISODIUM HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE BY REGENERATION FROM SAID SODIUM HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE; AND ADDING ALPHA, -BETA-PROPIONIC ACID COMPOUND TO THE REACTION MIXTURE; AND DISCONTINUING THE ADDITION OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE AND ALPHA,-BETA-PROPIONIC ACID COMPOUND AT THE POINT WHERE SAID SODIUM HALIDE BEGINS TO PRECIPITATE; WHEREBY DISODIUM HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE IS CONTINUOUSLY REGENERATED FOR DEHYDROHALOGENATING THE ALPHA-BETA-DIHALOPROPIONIC COMPOUND ADDED.
