    • A dispatch communication system (100) that includes a system controller (101), multiple base sites (103-105), and a group of communication units (107-111) employs a method and apparatus for communicating therein. A system device (either the system controller or a communication unit) establishes a dispatch communication between the group of communication units. Once the communication is established, the system device starts a timer and continuously determines a first length of time (call time) since establishment of the communication. The system device also determines whether an event indicative of call reassignment has occurred during the communication. When such an event has occurred, the system device determines a second length of time (hang time) based on the call time, wherein the hang time commences upon the occurrence of the event. Upon determining the hang time, the system device further determines whether call reassignment has occurred within the hang time. When call reassignment has not occurred within the hang time, the system device terminates the call.

    • In a trunked radio data communications system using half-duplex radios, plural data messages are exchanged over a single RF working channel using a technique where a working channel repeater assigned to a data call sends status messages to both the data originating radio and the data receiving radio indicating which radio is currently enabled to transmit a data message over the working channel. Each time the currently enabled radio sends a data message to the working channel repeater, the repeater changes the status message so that the other radio can respond. As a result, data messages can be efficiently and reliably exchanged over the same working channel without collision or having to request and set up a new working channel for each data message.

    • Base stations located at physically separate, remote locations are operated as a single site to permit trunked radio communications between portable radios located at those split sites. A first trunked RF communication site located at a first split site location includes plural first base stations, each first base station including a transceiver corresponding to an RF communications channel. The first site also includes a first site controller, connected to each of the first base stations, for assigning base station transceivers to radios requesting an RF communications channel. A second trunked RF communications site is located at a second split site location remote from the first split site location and includes plural second base stations along with a second site controller. A communication link links the first and second split sites so that they function as a single site trunked radio communications system with one of the first and second site controllers assigning the first and second base station transceivers to radios requesting RF communications channels. Base station transmitter power is measured at the split site locations and reported to the site controller currently in charge of the split location, single site trunked radio communications system.

    • A land mobile radio communication system has a plurality of cell sites, each of which typically has a plurality of repeaters. The over-the-air radio communications between the cell site repeaters and the mobile radios in the system include both a voice component and a data component. The data component is carried as low-frequency subaudible information. Communication channels are provided between the radio users at each site as well as between users at different sites and between mobile radio users and the public telephone network. Within a cell site, the transmitted and received communicatios are digitized and passed through serial buses in a time multiplex fashion. The digitized voice is transferred between time slots to provide the required switching function. The system includes operational software to provide direct inward dial telephone number recognition, automatic voice prompts for a user entering a new cell, call priority override, fraud control for radio fleets and a dynamic control channel.

    • A radio communications system includes plural radios with each radio having a microprocessor, a modem, and corresponding automatic number identification (ANI) information as well as a predetermined pattern of tones or digital codes corresponding to a particular radio frequency channel stored in memory. For each transmission, the radio microprocessor encodes the corresponding radio identification data that provides the encoded radio identification data to the radio modem in parallel format. The radio modem converts the encoded identification data into a serial data stream at the same time that the microprocessor is generating the predetermined pattern of tones or digital codes. Thereafter, the generated pattern of tones or digital codes is combined with the serial data stream and simultaneously transmitted over the transmission radio frequency channel. The modem also assists the microprocessor in the reception of radio identification data while the microprocessor is detecting received channel guard information. Because the modem has a data transmission frequency which exceeds the transmission frequency of the ANI data, each bit of ANI data is represented using a particular binary pattern (or its complement) to simulate an output at the modem corresponding to an ANI signalling carrier frequency.

    • In a multi-site communication system (100), audience continuity of an established communication group call can be maintained by a central controller (116) in the following manner. Upon initial establishment of the call, the central controller (116) allocates a communication resource (105-108) of each site in a first set of sites (101-104) to the communication group and establishes an audience list of active communication units (111-115). The audience list is continually updated with information on newly transmitting communication units and relocation information of communication units already in the list throughout the group call. When the group call ends, the audience list is maintained for a predetermined period of time. If during this predetermined period of time, a subsequent group call is requested for the same communication group, the group call can be re-established based on the information contained in the audience list.

    • In a Mobile Services Switching Center/Visitor Location Register (MSC/VLR), requests (made by a mobile station (MS)) for supplementary services may require processing only by the MSC/VLR, or they may require processing by a Home Location Register (HLR). A method of managing supplementary service procedures that are processed by an HLR includes supplying the MSC/VLR with a list containing only those supplementary service operations that shall be terminated in the MSC/VLR. In the MSC/VLR, a forward direction message is received from an MS, the forward direction message including an intended supplementary service operation. Then, the intended supplementary service operation is compared with the list of supplementary service operations. If the intended supplementary service operation is contained in the list of supplementary service operations, then the intended operation is terminated in the MSC/VLR. However, if the intended supplementary service operation is not contained in the list of supplementary service operations, then the forward direction message is forwarded, unaltered, to the HLR.
