摘要： A computer system architecture in which functionally compatible electronic components are located on modular printed circuit boards. Thus, a type of processor used by the system can be changed by replacing the printed circuit board incorporating the processor. Similarly a type of peripheral bus used can be changed simply by replacing the printed circuit board containing the peripheral controller. High-density connectors connect the circuit boards. Some embodiments of the invention use a single backplane. Other embodiments place peripheral slots on a second, passive backplane.

摘要： There is disclosed a two-piece electrical connector assembly having a first electrical connector and a second electrical connector. The first electrical connector includes a plurality of first signal conductors disposed along first and second sides of a first insulative housing and first ground plates disposed along the first and second sides of the first insulative housing and positioned adjacent the plurality of first signal conductors. The first electrical connector defines a slot for receiving an edge of a first printed circuit board. The second electrical connector includes a plurality of second signal conductors disposed along first and second sides of a second insulative housing and second ground plates disposed along the first and second sides of the second insulative housing and positioned adjacent the plurality of second signal conductors. Each of the second ground plates has a surface with a first edge and a second edge, at least one of the first edge or the second edge being bent in the direction toward the corresponding second signal conductor. When the first electrical connector and the second electrical connector are mated, the first signal conductors and corresponding second signal conductors are substantially enclosed and shielded by the first and second ground plates.

The terminals assemblies are fixed together by a alignment bar along their lower edges, with the bar having engagement lugs that are received within slots formed in the housings of the terminal assemblies, and they are fixed along their upper edges by a hollow retainer that has a series of slots formed in an interior surface thereof. The slots and the alignment bar are aligned together so that the spacing between adjacent terminal assemblies is even.

摘要： A high-density connector utilizes a plurality of terminal assemblies that are assembled together into a block, or single unit, to form a connector. Each terminal assembly of the connector utilizes a plurality of conductive terminals having contact portions for mating with an opposing connector, and body portions held within an insulative body portion of the assembly. The terminal assemblies support arrays of terminals arranged in a specific order of signal-ground-signal arrays. The terminal assemblies have at least two insulative housing portions that support the signal terminal arrays and an intervening ground terminal array, which may or may not be supported by an associated insulative housing. The ground members have a series of grounding tabs formed therewith with extend out from the plane of the ground members, on opposite sides thereof into contact with ground reference terminals of the signal terminal arrays. In this manner, a ground path is enabled between the signal terminal and ground terminal arrays.

摘要： A male connector (10) includes first and second individual housing portions (28, 30) engaging with each other, a number of substrates (16) held by the first housing portion and a number of signal contacts (18) and a number of grounding terminals (20) held by the second housing portion with the signal contacts confronting the grounding terminals. Each substrate has a first edge (108) and a second edge (110) orthogonal with the first edge. The first edges of the substrates are hidden behind corresponding lead-in bars (44) of the first housing portion and the second edges of the substrates are sandwiched between and removeably held by the signal contacts and the grounding terminals. The second edges are pushed toward the signal contacts by the grounding terminals because the grounding terminals are stronger than the signal contacts. A female connector (12) mateable with the male connector includes a dielectric member (22) and a number of signal contacts (24) and a number of grounding terminals (26) retained in the dielectric member in face-to-face relationship. The signal contacts straddle on a bottom surface (128) of the dielectric member. The male and the female connectors have a guiding means for guiding the connectors to correctly mate with each other.
