    • A cooling apparatus for an outboard motor which is provided with a water-cooled engine in a vertical alignment in which a crank shaft is vertically disposed, the engine being composed of a cylinder block, a cylinder head and an exhaust manifold into which water jackets are formed respectively and the water jackets are supplied with cooling water from a water pump disposed below the engine in a state mounted to a hull, the cooling apparatus comprising a cylinder cooling-water passage for supplying cooling water from the water pump to the water jackets of the cylinder block and said cylinder head, an exhaust cooling-water passage for supplying cooling water from the water pump to the water jacket of the exhaust manifold, the cylinder cooling-water passage and the exhaust cooling-water passage being independently disposed from each other and being joined together at downstream portions thereof, a thermostat provided for the water jacket of the cylinder block and a sensor for detecting a temperature of a cylinder surface provided for the water jacket of the cylinder block at a portion between the water jacket thereof and the thermostat.

    • This invention provides a cylinder head capable of efficiently cooling the portion at which a large number of valve ports gather. The present invention provides a cylinder head (20) of an engine equipped with suction and exhaust valve ports (3a, 5a) inside a cooling jacket (8), characterized in that a drain port (11) allowing the cooling water jacket (8) to communicate with the outside of the cylinder head (20) opens in a corner portion at one end portion of a side wall (1a) of the cylinder head, water feed ports (10a) extending along the side wall (1a), opening to the cooling water jacket (8) and communicating with the cooling water jacket of the cylinder block are formed in a cylinder bottom wall (1c), and a partition is so disposed as to divide the portion at which the water feed ports (10a) are open and the portion at which the suction and exhaust valve ports (3a, 5a) are disposed and to guide cooling water from the water feed ports (10a) round the suction and exhaust valve ports (3a, 5a).

    • To prevent deformation, in the upper portions of cylinder bores, that occurs when the cylinder head is mounted on the cylinder block by using head bolts and to prevent deformation in the upper portions of the cylinder bores caused by the thermal expansion of the cylinder head. In an open deck type cylinder block of an internal combustion engine in which the cylinder bores are separated from the outer shell of the cylinder block by water jackets in the upper deck, thick portions are formed near the ends of the cylinder bores located at both ends of the internal combustion engine in the direction of the crank shaft, the end portions being opposed to the outer shell of the cylinder block in the axial direction of the crank shaft, the thick portions being smoothly continuous with the outer shell of the initial cylinder bores. The thick portions have the greatest thickness at the ends in the direction of the crank shaft. A decreased-diameter portion having a thickness smaller than that of the upper portions is formed in the lower portions of the cylinder bores neighboring the regions where the thick portions are formed, and the decreased-diameter portion and the ordinary cylinder bores of the upper portions thereof are connected together through the tapered portion to decrease the weight of the cylinder block.
