    • A bore hole enlarging method and arrangement for connection with a rotary pipe string includes inner and outer body sections which form a body structure to provide a fluid flow path therethrough for communicating with piston and cylinder means formed between the body sections for receiving drilling fluid to effect telescopic movement between the body sections. Cutter arms are pivotally mounted on the inner body section and a cooperable support arrangement on the cutter arms and outer body section cooperate to expand or move the cutter arms outwardly of the body structure upon telescopic movement of the body sections in one relative direction and assist in attracting the cutter arms when desired.

    • A rotary bore hole enlarging bit is connected to a rotary pipe string having a drilling fluid flow path and an actuator flow path. The bit comprises a body structure including inner and outer telescopic body sections, expansible and retractible arms carrying cutters on the outer body section and an expander on the inner body section engageable with the arms to expand the arms and cutters upon telescopic movement of body sections in one relative direction. A piston and cylinder is provided between the inner and outer body sections to secure relative telescopic movement between the body sections. A first passage is disposed in the body structure and expansible arms and cutters for conducting drilling fluid to the cutters from the drilling fluid flow path, there being a second passage in the body structure for conducting actuator fluid to the piston and cylinder from the actuator fluid flow path.

    • Process and apparatus is described for mining of subterranean carbonaceous deposits such as tar sands, in which the deposit is treated in situ with circulating high pressure jets of heated mining fluid comprising water in admixture with gaseous hydrocarbons, or carbon dioxide and the deposit is also subjected substantially simultaneously to mechanical grinding in the vicinity of application of the circulating jets, so as to free and grind the deposit and float the separated carbonaceous portion to the surface. The mining tool has an umbrella-like action, comprising a plurality of mining arms carrying jets and potatable mining teeth or cutters, the tool being rotatable down hole to mine the deposit, and the mining arms thereof being radially expandable below ground, so as to enlarge a pilot hole drilled initially, into a large production hole for large scale mining projects.

    • A raise boring system is provided for boring raise holes wherein the finished raise holes have portions of different diameters. The system includes a raise head with a central drive stem defining an axis of rotation. Primary cutter means are positioned on the raise head for disintegrating the earth formations out to a first radial distance from said axis of rotation. Expanding secondary cutter means are positioned on the raise head for selectively disintegrating earth formations from said first radial distance out to additional and greater radial distances from said axis of rotation. The expanding secondary cutter means may be selectively located in a first position either beneath or in the same plane as the primary cutter means during boring at said first radial distance from said axis of rotation and selectively located in additional positions for boring at greater radial distances from said axis of rotation. Expansion means are provided for moving said expanding secondary cutter means to said additional positions during the boring operation.
