    • A stacker (10) for stacking sheets of material (17) is provided which is mounted to the sewing bed (12) of a sewing machine (11). The stacker has a support bed (26), a wheel assembly (29), and a grasping assembly (30). The wheel assembly advances the material over a rearward edge of the support bed to a position wherein a leading portion (19) of the material depends therefrom while a trailing portion (22) is held thereto by a movably motorized wheel (34) and holding finger (37). The grasping assembly includes a pair of reciprocating grasping fingers (46) mounted to a pivotably arm (43). In stacking the material, the grasping fingers grasp the trailing portion of the material while the arm pivots the trailing portion over the leading portion to a stacking position S.

    • A paper stacking apparatus including a paper stacking device for stacking plural sheets of paper thereon; a paper size detecting device for detecting a size of the paper to be stacked on the paper stacking device; a paper stack detecting device for detecting whether the paper is present or absent on the paper stacking device; and a control device for inhibiting stacking of the paper when the paper size detected by the paper size detecting device is different from a preset paper size, and for allowing the stacking when absence of the paper on the paper stacking device is detected by the paper stack detecting device during inhibition of the stacking. Accordingly, the control device inhibits paper having any sizes other than the preset paper size from being stacked on the top of stacked sheets of paper present on the paper stacking device and restores allowance of stacking when the paper present on the paper stacking device is removed during inhibition of stacking.

    • To move a plurality of interconnected segments which a zig-zag, accordeon or bellows pleat arrangement on or between which sheet elements such as projecting elements from a folded sheet are located along a transport path and to permit, selectively, expansion or compression of the segments for handling of sheet elements, and compact storage, an endless belt, preferably a gear belt sprocket chain or the like, is provided engageable with the segments. Preferably, lifting rollers are provided, selectively engageable with the belt to slightly raise the segments from transport rails, and decrease friction of the segments with respect to the rails. The segments can be stored, when empty or loaded, when collapsed against each other, and spread apart for sheet material handling. A plurality of such system can be located or adjacent each other, so that, when the segments are spread apart, suitable mixing or insertion steps can be carried out. To permit a space-saving arrangement, the transport path can be sinuous, with 180.degree. rotating elements, having carrying rods engaging the segments coupled to a disk, turning the segments about an arcuate path defined by the travel of the carrying rods on the disk. The segments can be raised, again, by placing a cam track adjacent the disk, on which the carrying rods can run off by means of cam follower rollers.

    • To provide for transfer of folded products, such as folded printed sheets received from a printing machine, between storage bins and a conveyor transport system, transport sheets which, at least in part, are magnetizable, are retained in the storage bins; a transfer element (9) in form of an endless elongated belt or the like has electromagnets secured thereto which are selectively energized to pick up the transfer sheets. The transfer element or belt is guided in a path past a delivery end (7") of a storage holder, then into the path of the transport system (2, 3) for transfer of folded products (1) from or to the sheets, and return of the sheets to a receiving end of the storage bin, at which point the magnets are deenergized to release the sheets into the bin, and can continue to travel--while deenergized--in an endless path for subsequent pick-up of sheets.

    • To re-orient the position of a sheet, or package of sheets (3), for example after having been folded in a folding former, cut, and transversely folded in a folding knife cylinder, a pair of vertically aligned dish-like plates, or disks (4,5) are moved in an endless transport path. The plurality of such pairs of plates or disks may be provided, each pair being moved in a path by a gear belt (16, 29) driven by a gear or sprocket wheel (20, 30). The plates or disks receive a sheet, or package of sheets (3) therebetween, then are moved towards each other to clamp the sheet therebetween, for example under cam control (25) and a spring (24), and, when the sheets are clamped, additional rotation is supplied to one (4) of the plates or disks, the other (5) being freely rotatable, for example by a stepping motor (37) coupled thereto via a gear transmission and a bushing or sleeve concentric with the shaft driving the sprocket wheel. Alternate pairs of plates or disks (4, 5; 4', 5'; 4", 5") are connected to individual stepping motors and gearing so that rapid handling of sheets, or sheet packages being delivered can be obtained. The system is particularly suitable for combination with multiple folding cylinders since multiple folds can be made by transporting the sheets at full supply speed.
