    • Novel airbag coating compositions comprising at least two separate and distinct layers are provided. The first layer (base coat), being in contact with the airbag surface, comprises a composition of at least one coating material which may comprise up to 30% by parts of the total amount of material in the first layer of a silicone resin which provides excellent adhesion, excellent tensile strength, and overall lower cost than standard silicone airbag coating materials. The second layer, being a coating for the first layer, provides excellent reinforcement and blocking characteristics to permit effective potential long-term storage and optimum use upon the occurrence of a collision. Such a second layer (topcoat) is preferably a silicone material but may also be selected from the group consisting of homopolymer and coplymer resins based on ethylene, propylene, acrylates, methacrylates, vinyl esters, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, polyurethanes, polyamides, and inorganic materials such as talc, silica, silicate, calcium carbonate, alumina, and the like. This two-layer system permits excellent strength and blocking properties to prevent undesired adhesion between portions of the target airbag when stored as well as to prevent seam combing at relatively low cost due to the materials and the relatively low amount required for the topcoat. An airbag fabric coated with this inventive two-layer system is also contemplated within this invention.

    • An inflator (22) for providing inflation fluid ( ) to inflate an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) includes a container (30) storing the inflation fluid under pressure. The container (30) has an outlet passage (80) through which the inflation fluid flows from the container. A rupturable closure member (92) fixed to the container (30) blocks flow of inflation fluid through the passage (80). A support (100) for the rupturable closure member (92) defines a chamber (110) adjacent the rupturable closure member (92). The rupturable closure member (92) has a first portion (122) deformed into the chamber (110) by the pressure of the inflation fluid and a second ring-shaped portion (124) encircling the first portion (122). An initiator (98) ruptures the closure member (92) when actuated by shearing the first portion (122) from the second portion (124).

    • An inflator configured to operate so that during a predetermined time from start of operation thereof, the amount of gas supplied by the inflator is large, and, thereafter, the amount of gas supplied is reduced and wherein the gas is continued to be supplied for a long period of time. The inflator includes first and second gas flow openings and a valve mechanism that operates to selectively open the first gas flow opening. When gas is supplied to the gas flow openings at a pressure equal to or greater than a predetermined value, the valve mechanism opens the first gas flow opening. When the pressure of the gas supplied to the gas flow openings becomes equal to or less than a predetermined value, the valve mechanism closes the first gas flow opening.

    • Method for rollover detection for automotive vehicles with safety-related devices, such as roll bars, (side) airbags and seat-belt tensioners. In a known method according to DE 196 09 717 A1, in which an angular rate sensor measures the angular velocity in each case around the vertical axis (yaw axis), the longitudinal axis and the transverse axis (pitch axis) of the vehicle, a rollover is detected when at least one of the measured angular velocities exceeds a defined threshold value (limit value). This publication further proposes calculating the rotational energy of the vehicle from the angular velocities, and indicating an impending rollover when the rotational energy exceeds a defined threshold. However, the disadvantage of this method is that false decisions cannot be excluded, when for example the vehicle is traveling over steep terrain or is subject to slow rolling motions while traveling around curves, especially into steep curves. According to the invention, starting from the initial position angle indicating the initial position of the vehicle, the integrated angular rate signalnullas angle of rotationnullis added so that the value proportional to the momentary inclination angle (in relation to the horizontal plane) can be compared to a trigger threshold which is a function of the angular rate. A safety-related device is triggered if this trigger threshold is exceeded by the cumulative value.

    • A passenger restraint system actuates a passenger restraint device more appropriately in situations where a vehicle rolls over. When the steering is turned in the same direction as the roll direction before the roll angle of the vehicle exceeds a threshold value, the passenger restraint system assumes the vehicle is headed toward recovery from the rollover behavior and subtracts a predetermined angle successively from the roll angle in accordance with the steering angle. Thus, the passenger restraint device is not actuated when the steering operation will stop the rollover behavior. On the other hand, the passenger restraint device is actuated when the steering is not operated and the vehicle rolls over, and when operation of the steering begins to effect a recovery but ultimately the vehicle rolls over anyway. In this situation, the passenger restraint system bypasses executing subtraction from the roll angle after the roll angular velocity exceeds a prescribed angular velocity.

    • A shock-absorbing safety apparatus for a vehicle, such as a truck or tanker. The apparatus includes inflatable containers attached to the exterior sides of the vehicle, a plurality of overturning sensors, a controller, and inflation sources corresponding to each inflatable container. The overturning sensors provide a signal indicating an incipient overturning condition to the controller which, upon determination that an overturn is incipient, induces the inflation sources to inflate at least those inflatable Containers disposed on the downward side of the vehicle. The overturning sensors can include pressure sensors detecting pressure between wheels of the vehicle and the road surface as well as tilt or angle sensors detecting the angular orientation of the vehicle with resect to the road. The inflation sources provide gas, which may be a fire-retardant gas. The containers preferably are made of a strong, abrasion resistant material and present a relatively high coefficient of friction.
