    • A jig for automatically welding pipe frames used to form vehicle seats is disclosed. In this jig, there is provided on a frame carrying plate a guide element having the reference plane of one of two side portions of a frame, so that the one side portion of the frame can be welded while it is in abutment with the guide element. To weld the other side portion of the frame, the frame carrying plate is moved and two adjusters provided in a bed plate are used for the reference. With such structure, while a welding machine remains fixed, by changing the references according to the portions to be welded in the width direction of the pipe frame, it is possible to weld the two side portions of the frame accurately.

    • A machine for manufacturing a reinforcing body for a concrete part, the reinforcing body including longitudinal rods and wires wound over and welded to the rods. The machine includes an axially stationary main wheel and an axially mobile support wheel mounted coaxially and drivable synchronously with the main wheel. Adjustable guide pieces are carried by the main wheel for supporting the longitudinal rods to be welded. A first servomechanism is connected to the guide pieces for producing a common uniform adjustment of the guide pieces. A welding carriage is movable transversely to the machine longitudinal direction. A second servomechanism synchronized with the first servomechanism moves the welding carriage in synchronism with the adjustment of the guide pieces and the rods and wire consecutively during rotary movement of the main wheel. A transducer is provided for generating a signal as a function of the rotary angular position which is fed to an amplifier for amplifying the signal by a factor corresponding to the desired size of the reinforcing body. A third servomechanism is connected for receiving the amplified signal and for moving the welding carriage transversely of the machine by an amount dictated by the amplified signal. The second and third servomechanisms are connected in series for moving the welding carriage in accordance with the sum of their movements.

    • An apparatus for holding a workpiece is provided which will allow rotation of the workpiece within the apparatus. A generally stationary base (78) supports a rotatable assembly which includes a pair of outer rings (62,62'), at least one inner hoop (64,64') positioned within each ring, and means (42,112) for securing the workpiece substantially within the assembly are included in the apparatus. Bearing mechanisms (94,94') on the base (78) engage portions of a respective outer ring to allow rotative movement of the assembly about an axis (52). Preferably the base is provided with means (84) for adjusting the distance between the outer rings (62,62') along the axis (52). Means (101) for preventing the rotation of the assembly and workpiece may also be provided.

When the welder's square and assembly are so mounted as a unit on the pipe, the second leg may be used to align a flange relative to an end of the pipe, determine whether an end edge of the pipe is normal to the longitudinal center line of the pipe, and indicate a transverse cutting line on the pipe. Two of the units when disposed back-to-back may be used to longitudinally align two lengths of pipe that have adjacent ends thereof in abutting contact. The assembly may be used to support a welder's square on a substantially horizontal structural member, such as a channel or eye beam, to achieve like results.

    • A cable, extending from a winch and passing over a pulley, is attached to a pipe section supported at its lower end by a rotatable conical support member. The rotatable conical support member is rotated by a motor drive. A second cable, extending from a second winch and passing over a second pulley, is connected to an expanse of pipe, comprising one or more pipe sections, suspended vertically above the pipe section. The expanse of pipe and the pipe section are aligned so that the bottom of the expanse of pipe abuts the top of the pipe section. A welder-operator welds the pipe section to the expanse of pipe at the abutment, actuating the motor drive to rotate the conical support member and the pipe section to expose the entire circumference of the abutment. After the weld is complete, the winch coupled to the expanse of pipe is activated to raise the expanse of pipe. The next pipe section to be added to the expanse of pipe is then attached to the other cable. That pipe section is then placed on the conical support member, and the process is repeated.

    • A method and apparatus for fabricating a pipeline from pipe segments and laying the pipeline upon a ground surface. The apparatus includes a plurality of longitudinally extending thermally insulated chambers which are connected end-to-end to form an articulated train. The individual thermally insulated chambers are connected by thermally insulated sleeves so as to provide continuous communication between adjacent ones of the insulated chambers while permitting articulated movement of the chambers. Means are provided within the articulated train for forming tubular sections end-to-end into a pipeline. Propelling means are provided to advance the articulated train from longitudinal support beneath the formed pipeline to lay the pipeline upon the ground surface. A system is also provided to control the temperature within the interior of the articulated train of thermally insulated chambers. The method includes the steps of maintaining a preselected temperature range within the interior of an articulated train of thermally insulated chambers and supporting at least a portion of an elongate tubular member within the enclosed articulated train. Tubular sections are connected within the enclosed train end-toend to form a continuous elongate conduit. The final step entails advancing the articulated train from beneath supporting engagement with the tubular conduit to position the pipeline upon the underlying ground surface.
