    • Front register lays for a sheet-fed rotary printing press are disclosed. Each front register lay includes one or a plurality of front register lay fingers secured to a rotatable shaft. The sheets to be registered are conveyed along a feed metal sheet into engagement with a registering surface of each lay finger. This registering surface is disposed generally vertically and perpendicular to the direction of sheet travel during registry of the sheet against the registering surface of the lay fingers. After the sheet has been registered, the register lay fingers are rotated out of engagement with the sheet so that the sheet can proceed to the rotary printing press.

    • A sheet transfer apparatus which can vary the effective spacing between the cutting cylinder and the transfer cylinder and between the transfer cylinder and the folding blade cylinder in a folding cylinder group for a rotary web-fed printing press is disclosed. The cutting knives and complementary counter cut bars of the cutting and transfer cylinders, respectively, are radially adjustable on the cylinders to insure that the webs of paper are accurately cut into sheets and transferred to the pins of the folding blade cylinder. The spacings can be adjusted to allow the folding cylinder group to operate in straight, single collect, and double collect productions.

    • A gear folder comprising a gear folding cylinder, at least a pair of folding rollers, and spaced pressure mechanisms for maintaining a precut ribbon segment in position on the folding cylinder for accurate folding of the segment. A first pressure mechanism is positioned before the folding rollers and a second similar mechanism is located after the folding rollers. These pressure mechanisms have rotating, yieldable surfaces which contact the ribbon section which is to be folded. The rotational speeds of the pressure mechanisms are different from each other and from that of the gear folding cylinder to tension the ribbon section on the folding cylinder.

    • A method of mounting and adjusting a printing plate on a plate cylinder of a multicolor offset printing press is described. The printing plate is clamped between front and rear clamping bars, the rear clamping bar being movable under the application of a tensioning force and occupying, upon clamping of the trailing end of the printing plate, a tension-release position. Tensioning of the printing plate is carried out by initially applying a nominal tensioning force to the rear clamping bar. A print register of the tensioned printing plate is then measured and compared to a target print register to determine a corrected tensioning position of the rear clamping bar corresponding to the target print register. The tension of the printing plate is thereafter released. The correct tensioning position is set as new reference position of the rear clamping bar before or after tensioning again the printing plate.

    • A system is provided for tempering, or controlling the temperature of a printing machine to maintain a desired temperature by the use of a cooling device. The cooling device prepares, on a first output, a tempering medium having at least one first desired temperature level, for a first supply current of the tempering medium for the components whose temperatures are to be controlled. The cooling device provides a first cooling process which can be carried out by a first fluid circuit. Tempering medium, which is to be cooled to a tempering temperature that is below the ambient, or an external temperature, are provided. A second cooling process is carried out by a device for cooling a second fluid circuit which is different from the first fluid circuit, by the use of outside air. The supply circuit, that is used to convey the tempering medium of the desired temperature, to the component whose temperature is to be controlled, can be coupled, in a thermal manner, to both of the cooling processes by the use of at least one heat exchanger.
