    • The present invention provides an improved gripper for a folding cylinder of a folding machine. Each gripper is independently actuated and includes a gripper member and cam follower arm having their own springs to provide a gripping force and to allow it to operate separately from other gripper members on the same folding cylinder. The force to open the gripper prior to the material to be folded being tucked into the folding cylinder opening is generated by the involute profile on the cam arm which pushes against the involute profile on each gripper member. Independently actuated grippers provide the advantage that the folding operation is not susceptible to material thickness variations and it is possible to fold materials with a different thickness on different lanes of a web folding machine.

    • A jaw cylinder has sets of fixed and movable jaws arranged at circumferential spacings thereon for folding the printed sheets into signatures as the sheets are thrust into the jaw cavities by folding blades on a folding cylinder. The movable jaws are mounted fast on respective jaw carrier shafts for pivotal motion into and out of engagement with the fixed jaws. For such pivotal motion of the movable jaws, the jaw carrier shafts are engaged via cam followers with a jaw drive cam of annular shape mounted to the frame, so that the movable jaws successively pivot toward and away from the fixed jaws upon rotation of the jaw cylinder. A timing screw acts between the jaw drive cam and the frame to cause angular displacement of the former relative to the latter about the axis of the jaw cylinder, in order to time the opening and closing of all the sets of jaws to the thrusting of the sheets off the surface of the folding cylinder by the folding blades.

    • A web of printed paper is cut into sections by a cutting cylinder while riding on a folding cylinder, and each paper section has its midpart subsequently pushed by a folding blade on the folding cylinder into a jaw cavity formed in the surface of a jaw cylinder in order to be folded into the form of a signature while being transferred from the folding cylinder onto the jaw cylinder. Mounted adjacent the opposite ends of the jaw cavity in the jaw cylinder are a pair of hooks which are cammed into and out of the space that is created by the midpart of each paper section upon insertion in the jaw cavity. The paper section has its midpart positively retained in the jaw cavity while being folded. A set of fixed and movable jaws is also provided in the jaw cavity and functions mostly to fold the paper section rather than to grip the same against accidental detachment.

    • The present invention is generally directed to providing a method and apparatus for accurately and efficiently folding a flat product (e.g., a web of paper or signatures obtained therefrom) during its delivery. Exemplary embodiments provide a single device for performing the two functions of folding and decelerating flat products. Rotatable seizing elements of a deceleration drum interface with any known folding cylinder having a known tucker blade assembly. As such, the accurate and mark-free folding of a conventional jaw folder can be achieved with any desirable paging, including the wide maximum paging range typically associated with rotary tucker blade folders. A deceleration drum according to the present invention can interface with any folding cylinder having a tucker blade assembly used to create a cross-fold, and can thereby replace any conventional combination of a folder (e.g., rotary tucker blade folder or jaw folder) and associated downstream deceleration device. Seizing devices associated with the deceleration drum create a fold off of a fixed (e.g., a non-retractable) or a retractable tucker blade of the folding cylinder, each seizing element acting as a jaw which removes the signature, and creates the fold during product deceleration and delivery.
