    • A flow-through filling pump for receiving a liquid supply and discharging a predetermined amount of the liquid therefrom includes a housing defining a supply chamber and a discharge chamber and a reciprocating piston positioned in the housing intermediate the supply and discharge chambers. The piston is movable along an axial liquid flow path defined by the chamber, between a fill position and a discharge position. A drive assembly is operably connected to the piston to drive the piston between the fill and discharge positions. A seal member extends between the piston and the housing to isolate the supply and the discharge chambers and at least a portion of the piston from a portion of the housing at which the drive assembly operably connects to the piston. The pump includes a non-return type inlet valve mounted to the piston. The inlet valve has a biasedly mounted valve element, which is biased to the closed position. The inlet valve is moveable with the piston and the valve element is movable relative to the piston to permit and to terminate flow of liquid through the valve into the discharge chamber as the piston is moved between the fill and discharge positions.

    • A pressure equalizer for use with a reciprocating pump provides a liquid accumulation region to facilitate precise control over the amount of liquid discharged from the pump, and provides a short duration pressure spike to facilitate complete discharge of the liquid from the pump and associated components. The equalizer includes a housing mountable to the pump, in fluid communication with the pump internals. A variable volume assembly, including an isolation member, such as a flexible diaphragm, is carried by the equalizer housing and is in fluid communication with the pump. The diaphragm is adapted to expand outwardly and contract inwardly in conjunction with an increase and a decrease in pressure in the pump. Each the outward expansion and inward contraction are within a predetermined, preset range of movement. The equalizer includes a retaining member which is engageable with the diaphragm, and at least one biasing element positioned on the retaining member, operably connected to the diaphragm. The biasing element is adjustable to set the outward expansion range of movement of the diaphragm, and the inward contraction range of movement of the diaphragm. The diaphragm expands within the preset range of movement in response to an increase of pressure in the pump to define the accumulation region and to accumulate a predetermined amount of liquid therein. The diaphragm contracts within the preset range of movement in response to a decrease of pressure in the pump to discharge the accumulated liquid therefrom.

    • A filling system for filling a container is set forth. The container to be filled has a bottom portion and a plurality of sidewalls defining a container cross-section. The filling system comprises a fill pipe having a product inlet and a product outlet, a valve rod disposed in the fill pipe, a flexible outlet extension, and an umbrella-shaped sealing member having a bottom portion. The valve rod and the sealing member are movable between a first position in which the sealing member engages and seals the product outlet and a second position in which the sealing member is disengaged from the product outlet. The bottom portion of the sealing member is preferably shaped to conform to the interior bottom portion of the container. The flexible outlet extension extends from the product outlet and is dimensioned to engage and conform to the sidewalls of the container during filling thereby to inhibit mixing of product and air during the filling cycle. Additionally, the bottom portion of the sealing member may be used to engage the bottom of the container to assist in displacing air from a sealing region defined by the flexible outlet extension and the walls of the container.

    • A method and an apparatus for filling a container with product are set forth which assist in reducing the mixing of air and product as the product is dispensed into the container. In accordance with one embodiment of the apparatus, the apparatus comprises a fill pipe for communicating a product therethrough to a fill opening of the fill pipe. A flexible dispensing receptacle having a first end disposed about the fill opening of the fill pipe for receiving product communicated through the fill pipe. The flexible receptacle is capable of being filled with a volume of product that is substantial when compared to the volume of product that is to be dispensed into a single container. Further, the flexible receptacle is dimensioned to facilitate its insertion into the interior of the container. A pressure actuated nozzle is disposed at a second end of the flexible receptacle through which product is dispensed into the container. Various modifications and enhancements to this basic apparatus are also contemplated. In accordance with one embodiment of the method, the method comprises the steps of 1) filling a flexible receptacle with a volume of product; 2) inserting the flexible receptacle into the container; and 3) dispensing product from the flexible receptacle into the container.
