    • A method whereby a coating layer is formed on an outer surface of a cylindrical substrate by dipping the cylindrical substrate in a coating solution containing dissolved material, and vertically removing the cylindrical substrate from the coating solution. The lower end portion of the substrate which has a thick portion as a sag formed by a run of the coating solution on the outer surface of the substrate is brought into contact with a tapered outer surface of a member having said tapered outer surface immediately after the substrate is removed from the coating solution. Thus, the thick portion is transferred from the lower end of the substrate to the tapered surface. Then, a solvent of the dissolved material is sprayed to an inner wall surface of the substrate while a gap is formed between the lower end of the substrate and the tapered surface, thereby removing the material from a lower end face and the inner wall surface of the substrate. A sag removing apparatus comprises a member having a tapered outer surface with a rotatable spray nozzle for spraying the inner wall of the substrate with a solvent.

    • In an IC (integrated circuit) card, a CPU (central processing unit) is connected to a data bus and an address bus. A data memory is connected to the data bus and the address bus. The data memory is a rewritable memory, such as EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read only memory) or battery backed-up RAM (random access memory). The data memory is segmented into a predetermined number of sectors each consisting of predetermined bytes. An external processing device, such as a terminal device is connected to the data bus and the address bus, via a one-bit I/O line and a port. The terminal device supplies a processing instruction via the I/O line to the third port. The CPU receives the processing instruction via the data bus, analyzes the instruction, and reads out and executes the necessary program. The CPU supplies the results of each processing to the terminal device, by way of the data bus, the port and the I/O bus.

    • A method and apparatus for producing vortex rings of a gas in a liquid. The apparatus includes: an accumulator including a gas outlet for discharging the gas and a gas inlet for introducing a gas from a gas supply source thereinto; a nozzle attached to the outlet of the accumulator in a communicating relation to the accumulator, the nozzle being of elasticity such that the nozzle is sealingly closed under liquid pressure when used; valve, connected to the accumulator, for permitting a gas supply from the gas supply source to the nozzle; and a mechanism for actuating the valve when gas pressure within the accumulator reaches predetermined pressure levels. In the method an accumulator is positioned in the liquid, and then the gas under pressure higher than that in the liquid surrounding the accumulator is supplied to the accumulator, from which the supplied gas is introduced into a nozzle communicated to the accumulator to open the nozzle against the pressure in the surrounding liquid. Then, in the nozzle there is formed a stream of the gas having a higher velocity at the center of the nozzle than that at the inner periphery of the nozzle so that a vortex ring of the gas is formed. The formed vortex ring is ejected from the nozzle into the liquid. The gas supply to the nozzle is stopped and thereby the nozzle is closed under the pressure in the surrounding liquid.
