摘要： Fuel management system for operation of a spark ignition engine. The system includes a source of gasoline and a source of anti-knock fuel. A proportioning valve receives the gasoline and the anti-knock fuel to discharge a mixture having a controlled gasoline/anti-knock fuel ratio. A single high pressure pump receives the mixture and delivers the mixture to an injector. A fuel management control system controls the proportioning valve and the injector for injection of the mixture into a cylinder of the engine to control knock. A preferred anti-knock fuel is ethanol.

摘要： Ion mobility spectrometer. The spectrometer includes an enclosed region having a gas with a selected chemical species contained therein. An energy source ionizes the gas and the chemical species. Spaced apart electrodes generate high frequency and DC electric fields across the enclosed region and circuitry is provided for generating voltage waveforms on the electrodes. The voltage waveforms include a symmetric RF field to minimize ion loss and to prevent clustering of the ions with water molecules during an ion buildup phase. A DC and asymmetric, non-uniform RF field is provided to separate and focus the ions in the region during an ion separation phase. Finally, a changing DC or RF field causes the ionized chemical species to move to the electrodes and read-out circuitry responds to current in the electrodes to indicate the presence and/or amount of the chemical species.

摘要： Fuel management system for efficient operation of a spark ignition gasoline engine. Injectors inject an anti-knock agent such as ethanol directly into a cylinder of the engine. A fuel management microprocessor system controls injection of the anti-knock agent so as to control knock and minimize that amount of the anti-knock agent that is used in a drive cycle. It is preferred that the anti-knock agent is ethanol. The use of ethanol can be further minimized by injection in a non-uniform manner within a cylinder. The ethanol injection suppresses knock so that higher compression ratio and/or engine downsizing from increased turbocharging or supercharging can be used to increase the efficiency of the engine.

摘要： A method and apparatus for operation of an internal combustion engine running under a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode with fuel partially reformed by an onboard fuel reformer. In one embodiment, the onboard fuel reformer is a plasmatron fuel converter. The temperature and composition of the gaseous charge into the cylinders of the engine can be adjusted by mixing the charge into the cylinder (which contains air, exhaust gas and/or unreformed fuel) with hydrogen rich gas from the onboard reformer. The fuel reformer transforms the fuel to a mixture of hydrogen, CO and other light hydrocarbons. By adjusting operation in the reformer, the composition of the reformate can be altered. In addition to thermal management of the cylinder charge, the reformate can be used as a fuel blending agent in order to adjust the octane/cetane number of the air charge and thus control the ignition timing of the overall fuel/air charge to the cylinder.

The method for reducing required octane number of gasoline needed to prevent knock includes the addition of hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gas containing carbon monoxide to gasoline. Octane number can be improved by 5 or more for a hydrogen energy fraction of 10%. The spark ignition gasoline engine system includes a spark ignition gasoline engine and a source of gasoline and hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gas. Apparatus is provided to supply the gasoline and the hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gas to the engine at a varying hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gas to gasoline ratio selected both to prevent knock and to ensure a desired level of combustion stability throughout a full range of engine operation. The engine system may be normally aspirated or boosted; the compression ratio may be high such as greater than 11 or below 11, and EGR may be added. The hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gas to gasoline ratio may be controlled as a function of boost pressure, torque, engine speed, or air/fuel mixture ratio.

摘要： A fuel tank system for gasoline or flexible gasoline/ethanol powered vehicles that use independently controlled direct ethanol injection to provide a large on-demand octane boost is disclosed. The on-demand octane boost is used when needed to prevent knock. The ethanol can be in the form of 100% ethanol or E85 (a 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline mixture) and is stored in a second tank that is separate from the tank that which contains the primary fuel. The primary fuel can be gasoline, E85, ethanol or a mix of these fuels. The fuel tank system enables convenient, quick, flexible and minimal cost refueling of the separate fuel tank. A range of fueling options is available to provide the driver with the maximum freedom to choose fuels depending upon price and availability. Valves may be utilized to direct the flow in fuel to the various tanks.

摘要： A system and method for determining loading of a filter having a first dielectric constant with a material having a different dielectric constant, is disclosed. The filter is contained within a metallic container forming a microwave cavity, and microwave or RF energy is created within the cavity and changes in the cavity microwave response are monitored. The changes in cavity microwave response are related to filter loading. In a preferred embodiment, the microwave energy includes multiple cavity modes thereby allowing determination of spatial distribution of the contaminant material loading. In one embodiment, the microwave cavity response includes a shift in frequency of a resonant mode. Alternatively, the microwave cavity response includes a shift in quality factor Q of a resonant mode. The microwave cavity response may include a shift in amplitude or peak width of the microwave's signal at resonance.
