    • A micro range RF data transmission system comprising at least one transmitter incorporated in a moving device and at least one receiver positioned along a fixed path that can be aligned to create a data transfer point. The moving device moves along a fixed path. Each of the at least one receiver is positioned along the fixed path such that when the moving device moves along the fixed path, one of the transmitters aligns with one of the receivers creating the data transfer point. The transmitter will only transmit a micro range signal when the transmitter is at the data transfer point. Each receiver includes an electromagnetic shield formed around the perimeter of the receiver to form a directional channel for the micro range signal. A control system is used for controlling an industrial sheet-making device. The control system uses multiple data transfer points as the backbone for bi-directional communication.

    • A controller design for switching between m linear multivariable controllers each of whom stabilizes a linear plant has been presented. A Youla-Kucera factorization was exploited in the interest of obtaining a closed-loop system that is exponentially stable for any switching signal σ(t) in the absence of plant model uncertainty. Robustness to practical model uncertainty was also considered and lower and upper bounds on the tolerable magnitude of unstructured additive plant uncertainty were presented. Numerical example demonstrated that the two controller degrees of freedom in the proposed controller design could be used to separately modify the closed-loop steady-state (with respect to σ(t)) performance and the switching transients.

    • An efficient device for capturing fast moving particles has an adhesive particle shield that includes (i) a mounting panel and (ii) a film that is attached to the mounting panel wherein the outer surface of the film has an adhesive coating disposed thereon to capture particles contacting the outer surface. The shield can be employed to maintain a substantially particle free environment such as in photolithographic systems having critical surfaces, such as wafers, masks, and optics and in the tools used to make these components, that are sensitive to particle contamination. The shield can be portable to be positioned in hard-to-reach areas of a photolithography machine. The adhesive particle shield can incorporate cooling means to attract particles via the thermophoresis effect.

    • Employment of one or more resealable access slots in a steam distributor apparatus affords easy access to the internal chambers of the apparatus for cleaning and maintenance. The access slots can be located on the lower walls of the steam discharge chambers where debris tend to aggregate during operation of the apparatus. The apparatus can have multiple discharge chambers that are separated by spaced-apart partitions or baffle panels. Steam that is supplied from a steam header to each chamber exits each chamber through perforations of a discharge screen plate that is permanently secured onto adjacent partition panels. Actuators can regulate the steam flow from the steam header to the individual discharge chambers thereby creating a steam curtain with uniform or non-uniform cross direction profiles as desired.

    • Thermomechanical pulp is an important process for producing fibrous mass used in papermaking. A two-level control strategy that stabilizes and optimizes the refining process has been developed. The Stabilization layer consists of a multivariable model predicative range controller that regulates the refiner line operations. The Quality Optimization layer provides the pulp quality control as measured by an online pulp quality (freeness, fibre length) sensor. This control startegy leverages the natural decoupling in the process. The modular design technique is able to handle multiple refiner lines that empty into a common latency chest. A global optimizer is also used to integrate and coordinate the two layers for enhanced constraint handling.
