    • A transmission actuator has a torque generating mechanism for generating a torque from a drive shaft, a speed reduction mechanism for multiplying a torque from the torque generating mechanism through a differential motion produced by a difference in gear ratio between a gearset of a first internally toothed gear and a first externally toothed gear and a gearset of a second internally toothed gear and a second externally toothed gear, a motion direction changing mechanism for converting the torque multiplied into a thrust and a friction engagement mechanism for transmitting power from an input shaft to an output shaft by virtue of the thrust so converted, wherein the drive shaft is made hollow so that the input shaft and the output shaft are disposed in a hollow portion of the drive shaft.

    • Arranged within a differential gear case are first and second side gears rotating together with first and second output shafts, respectively; first and second differential gears engaged with one of the first and second side gears and rotatably supported within cylindrical holes, respectively, so as to be partially engaged with each other to move circularly together with the differential gear case; and a viscous coupling capable of transmitting, between a hub rotating together with the output shaft and a housing, a torque in response to the difference in the speed. The outer periphery of the housing is provided with a cam surface to be engaged, in the direction of rotation, with the first and second differential gears to press and bias the first and second differential gears against the inner cylindrical surfaces of the cylindrical holes.

    • An operating system used in a vehicle equipped with a part-time four-wheel drive comprises; a center-differential shiftable between at least a two-wheel drive mode and a four-wheel differential-locked drive mode; a free-wheeling device with a clutch mechanism incorporated in an output shaft of an axle differential associated with wheels which are rendered non-driven when the vehicle is traveling in the two-wheel drive mode and adapted to connect and disconnect the transmission of driving power between the axle differential and the non-driven wheel; a drive mode selecting member operated by a driver in the driver's compartment to select a desired driving mode of operation of the center-differential; and a shift control device which sequentially shifts the center-differential responding to an operation of the drive mode selecting member. The shift control device controls the center-differential to be intermediately shifted into a four-wheel differential-locked drive mode upon being shifted from one to the other between the two-wheel and four-wheel differential-locked drive modes. The shift control device shifts finally the center-differential into the other drive mode after locking the clutch mechanism to connect the transmission of driving power between the axle differential and the wheel which is rendered non-driven when the center-differential is traveling in two-wheel drive mode.

[Also in Division F2] A vehicle axle casing, secured to a differential casing containing either a standard or a lockable differential, has a lug and an opening in the casing to provide bearing supports on an axis parallel to the axle. Two axle casings 22, 23 are secured to a differential casing 21 of a tractor and carry in bearings 41, 42 a bevel differential gear 35 driving axle shafts 25, 26. A dog clutch member 51 splined to the shaft 26 may be moved axially against a spring 54 to engage teeth 53, rigid with differential carrier 38, to lock the differential. The clutch member 51 is engaged by pivotal movement of a fork 77 produced through pin 84 and cam slot 82 on rotation of a spindle 75, by pedal 76, having an axis coaxial with a brake shaft 68. The shaft 68 and spindle 75 are carried in bushes in a lug 60 and an opening 62 in the axle casing 23. When it is desired to fit a standard differential unit, the differential carrier of the standard unit is carried in a bearing in a flange 90 of the casing 23 and the spindle opening 62 is blanked off. In a modification for use when a lockable differential is fitted to a standard axle casing, a bearing carrying plate is interposed between the axle and differential casings, the locking spindle is carried in the brake spindle bearing opening and a plate lug to carry the brake bearing is bolted to the exterior of the axle casing.
