    • Apparatus and method for remotely positioning a probe, such as an examination or repair probe, in a tubular member. The tubular member may be a nuclear steam generator heat transfer tube to be examined or repaired by the probe. The probe is connected to a conduit which supports the probe as the probe advances along the inner diameter of the tube to the location of the tube requiring examination or repair. The conduit has a portion thereof wound about a take-up reel. As the probe and conduit advance in the tube, it unwinds from about the take-up reel. However, as the conduit unwinds from about the take-up reel, it may tend to develop a "kinked", twisted or contorted region therein inducing torsional stress in the conduit. Such torsional stress may be severe enough to break the conduit. The apparatus of the invention includes a gripper capable of gripping the conduit and also includes a rotator connected to the gripper for rotating both the gripper and the conduit gripped thereby. As the rotator rotates the gripper, the gripper and a portion of the conduit simultaneously rotate for removing the contorted region, so that the torsional stress induced in the conduit is relieved.

    • A turns count anomaly detector for detecting any irregularities in the pat count of a fiber optic able from fiber optic dispensers. The detector receives an input from an infrared source and receiver that monitors a fiber optic cable during fiber optic cable payout at speeds up to 700 feet per second. A turns count pulse electronics circuitry supplies an input to a turns count anomaly detector. The turns count anomaly detector is comprised of transistor transistor logic one-shot configured as a negative recovery monostable multivibrator. Input to the one-shot is received from a pulse conditioning circuit comprised of a logic signal inverter and a digital flip-flop. The input to the pulse conditioning circuit is the output from the turns count pulse electronics. The output from the one-shot is a logic low which represents an anomaly in payout which is marked on a strip-chart recorder for manual review or recorded for replaying and stripping at 1/400 of real-time speed for calibrated peel off speeds up to about 700 feet per second for use of the turns count anomaly detector in a real-time mode.

    • A method and apparatus for operating a textile machine, such as an automatic bobbin winder or an automatic spinning machine, include subdividing a course of operation into individual operating steps; monitoring at least one of the operating steps with at least one sensor for detecting presence, absence or movement past the sensor of an article connected to the textile machine or success or failure of a provision or an operating step and tripping an automatic intervention into the course of operation as a function of the outcome of the detection. According to the method, the functional capability of the sensor is automatically monitored, and an automatic switch over takes place from the operating program to a prepared substitute program no longer requiring the sensor for continued operation of the textile machine after failure of the sensor. The apparatus includes a device connected to the at least one sensor for operating the textile machine according to an operating program and a predetermined substitute program assuring continued operation of the textile machine even if the at least one sensor has failed. A device is connected to the operating device for automatically monitoring capability of the at least one sensor. A switchover device is connected to the monitoring device for switching over textile machine operation from the operating program to the substitute program after a failure of the at least one sensor ascertained by the monitoring device.

    • In an automatic textile winder, an origination indicia is associated with each spinning tube supplied to the winder, e.g., in the form of a label, marking, or the like, on or applied to each tube or to a peg-tray carrier therefor. A quality-control device is provided at each winding station to monitor a quality-related parameter of the yarn winding operation. Another device is provided at each winding station in operative association with the respective quality control device for cancelling the indicia of each spinning tube whose yarn satisfies a predetermined value for the quality-related parameter as determined by the quality-control device, but leaving uncancelled the indicia of any spinning tube whose yarn fails to satisfy such quality value. Each spinning tube discharged from the winding stations is delivered to a detection station for reading or otherwise detecting any indicia remaining thereon. In this manner, the origin of inferior or sub-quality yarn can be readily identified.
