    • A winding machine has winding stations and a transport path for leading cops to the winding stations. An apparatus for loosening a reserve yarn winding from peripheries of the cops disposed at the transport path includes scissors having two legs being open at an onset of a yarn search. One of the legs is a yarn loosener to be placed against a cop positioned on the transport path. The cop is rotated to bring the yarn loosener under the reserve yarn winding. An actuator closes the scissors after a predetermined search period. The apparatus for loosening the reserve yarn winding may include a yarn loosener to be placed at a cop positioned on the transport path, wherein the yarn loosener has a forward edge for picking up a yarn, and a sharp cutting edge with a height being increased at increasing distances from the forward edge for cutting the yarn.

    • A method and apparatus for operating a textile machine, such as an automatic bobbin winder or an automatic spinning machine, include subdividing a course of operation into individual operating steps; monitoring at least one of the operating steps with at least one sensor for detecting presence, absence or movement past the sensor of an article connected to the textile machine or success or failure of a provision or an operating step and tripping an automatic intervention into the course of operation as a function of the outcome of the detection. According to the method, the functional capability of the sensor is automatically monitored, and an automatic switch over takes place from the operating program to a prepared substitute program no longer requiring the sensor for continued operation of the textile machine after failure of the sensor. The apparatus includes a device connected to the at least one sensor for operating the textile machine according to an operating program and a predetermined substitute program assuring continued operation of the textile machine even if the at least one sensor has failed. A device is connected to the operating device for automatically monitoring capability of the at least one sensor. A switchover device is connected to the monitoring device for switching over textile machine operation from the operating program to the substitute program after a failure of the at least one sensor ascertained by the monitoring device.

    • A device for making ready for the unwinding process of cops of the type wherein the cops are guided by conveyor means on a path along the contact line of two counter-rotating cylinders arranged parallel to each other so that the beginning of the thread of the cop is exposed and pulled off by means of the cylinders. A transport plate which is movable transversely to the travel direction of the cops, is equipped with several teeth, is arranged underneath of the support for the cop tube bases. The toothed transport picks up threads individually and makes them a desired length and feeds them to a scissors which individually cuts them to the same length. The threads are then picked up by a suction device in position for further processing.

    • A method and apparatus for readying filled supply bobbins for receipt by a winding machine. As each bobbin is processed its unwinding end is trimmed and a jet delivers the end through a mouth of a bunch maker and into a chamber which diverges from proximate the mouth. A vortex then carries the unwinding end into the chamber and deposits the unwinding end in a circuitous pattern substantially within an annular concavity in a perforate member forming an end face of the wide portion of the chamber. The amount of yarn deposited in the chamber may be varied to vary the size of a resultant bunch. In order to more readily and uniformly discharge the unwinding end from the perforate member and carry it outwardly through the chamber to provide a compact bunch, air for discharging the bunch is substantially simultaneously passed through all of the perforations with substantially equal force. The resultant bunch is compressed as the flow of air carries it through the chamber and into a neck between the chamber and the mouth. This air passes through vents in the chamber wall upstream of the neck to keep from driving the bunch through the mouth. A ram then moves the compressed bunch through the mouth and deposits the bunch at a desired location in a hollow core of the bobbin which has been positioned at the mouth. In order to provide the previously mentioned discharging air flow through the perforations, a second chamber is provided in communication through the perforate member with the first mentioned chamber. A piston is received in the second chamber. The vortex air stream which deposits the unwinding end on the perforate member passes through the perforations and in conjunction with vacuum applied to both ends of the second chamber, the piston is positioned at the end of the second chamber opposite the perforate member. The vortex air and the vacuum is then stopped and air pressure is introduced into the second cylinder to drive the piston toward the perforate member, whereupon the piston compresses the discharging air which passes with substantially equal force through the perforations of the perforate member.
