    • An automotive heating apparatus includes a cylinder block forming an enclosed space therein, the gear pump means enclosed in the cylinder block, and a water jacket formed in the cylinder block outside the gear pump means. The gear pump means includes an input shaft connected to an engine and disposed in the enclosed space, a driving gear fixed to the input shaft and disposed in the enclosed space, a driven gear meshing with the driving gear and disposed in the enclosed space, and a viscous fluid sealed in the enclosed space. In the automotive heating apparatus, the viscous fluid is forcibly transferred from a suction side to a discharge side by the rotation of the driving gear and the driven gear, and at the same time there is caused a back flow of the viscous fluid resulting from an internal leakage from the discharge side to the suction side. Thus, the automotive heating apparatus stirs and shears the viscous fluid and increases the viscous fluid internal energy in the enclosed space, and it converts the heat generated by the viscous fluid to a temperature increment of circulating water through the water jacket. Hence, the automotive heating apparatus can not only achieve the heating in the automotive passenger room relatively quickly after starting the engine, but also produces a good on-boardability and a reduction in the manufacturing cost.

    • An automotive air conditioning apparatus includes an input shaft connected to an engine, a pump unit disposed on the input shaft, a compressor unit disposed on the input shaft, and a separator wall disposed between the pump unit and the compressor unit and adapted to seal therebetween in the axial direction of the input shaft. The pump unit includes a first short-circuiting passage communicating the suction space and the discharge space, and the first short-circuiting passage is provided with a first control valve. The compressor unit includes a second short-circuiting passage communicating the suction area and the discharge area, and the second short-circuiting passage is provided with a second control valve. When heating, the first short-circuiting passage is closed with the first control valve, and the second short-circuiting passage is opened with the second control valve to disable the compressor unit. When cooling, the first short-circuiting passage is opened with the first control valve to disable the pump unit, and the second short-circuiting passage is closed with the second control valve.

    • A scroll-type vacuum pump includes a fixed scroll and a movable scroll. The fixed scroll has a base plate and a volute portion formed on the base plate. The movable scroll includes a base plate having a volute portion. The volute portions cooperate to form a variable displacement fluid pocket between the two scrolls. The movable scroll includes a rear boss projecting from the rear surface of the base plate and a front boss projecting from the front surface of the base plate. The rear boss is located in a working region, which includes the volute portion of the movable scroll. An eccentric shaft is integrally formed on a drive shaft. The eccentric shaft is inserted in rotates relatively to both bosses to support the movable scroll. The eccentric shaft receives a radial force generated in the working region mainly through the rear boss. Accordingly, no inclination moment is applied to the movable scroll and the movable scroll does not incline with respect to the fixed scroll. This improves the performance and efficiency of the pump.

    • A viscous fluid type heat generator which comprises a housing assembly defining therein a heat generating chamber in which heat is generated, and a heat receiving chamber arranged adjacent to the heat generating chamber for permitting a heat exchanging fluid to circulate therethrough to receive heat transferred from the heat generating chamber. Heat generation suppressing means is provided for suppressing the heat generation of the viscous fluid under the shearing stress when the temperature of the part of the viscous fluid, detected by the temperature sensor, exceeds a predetermined limit temperature.

    • A heating method and apparatus for vehicles. A viscous fluid type heater is located in a vehicle fluid circuit. The heater has a heating chamber that holds viscous fluid and a rotor. The rotor rotates to shear the viscous fluid and produce heat. The heat is transmitted to a heat exchange chamber located adjacent to the heating chamber. The rotor rotates at variable rotation velocity, which affects the temperature of the viscous fluid. Circulating fluid in the fluid circuit and is heated in the heat exchange chamber. The heater includes a reservoir chamber communicating with the heating chamber to store viscous fluid. The heater has a valve that selectively connects and disconnects the reservoir chamber with the heating chamber to regulate heat production. The apparatus has a detecting device for detecting a temperature or a speed that is indicative of the temperature of the viscous fluid. The apparatus also has a controller for controlling the valve to reduce heat production when the temperature of the viscous fluid is deemed to be high.
