    • A transfer case for a four-wheel drive vehicle having a planetary gear assembly and a synchronized range clutch which can be selectively shifted on-the-move establishing high-range and low-range drive modes. The planetary gear assembly includes a ring gear, a sun gear, a carrier coupled for rotation with an output shaft of the transfer case, and a pinion gear rotatably supported from the carrier and which is meshed with the ring gear and the sun gear. The range clutch includes a first sleeve coupled for rotation with the ring gear and which is rotatably supported from a second sleeve coupled for rotation with an input shaft of the transfer case. With the range clutch in a first position, the first sleeve is uncoupled from the housing and the second sleeve is coupled to the carrier for driving the output shaft at a first speed ratio relative to the input shaft. With the range clutch in a second position, the first sleeve is coupled to the housing and the second sleeve is coupled to the sun gear for driving the output shaft at a second speed ratio relative to the input shaft.

    • A dual planetary differential for a two wheel/four wheel drive vehicle transfer case mechanism providing an unequal torque split between the front and rear wheels during its full-time four wheel drive operation. The dual planetary gear set may be shifted by means of a mode clutch to provide either four wheel drive with full-time differentiation between the front and rear wheels or a part-time four wheel drive mode wherein the dual planetary is in a locked-up condition. The first and second sun gears of the dual planetary have unequal diameters with differing numbers of teeth such that, for example, proportionally more torque is transferred to the rear wheels than the front wheels. The sun gears have complementary frusto-conical web portions arranged in a juxtaposed compact manner within the transfer case.

    • A transfer case includes an input shaft, first and second output shafts, and a planetary gearset including a sun gear, a ring gear and planet gears rotatably supported on a carrier coupled to the first output shaft. A collar is driven by the sun gear and selectively drives the carrier. The ring gear is moveable between first and second positions. The collar is coupled to the ring gear for movement therewith between first and second positions. The collar is operable in its first position to couple the sun gear to the carrier and operable in its second position to be released from engagement with the carrier. The ring gear is operable in its first position to be released from coupled engagement with a stationary member and operable in its second position to be coupled to the stationary member. A mechanism moves the ring gear between its first and second positions.

    • A controllable, multi-mode, bi-directional overrunning clutch assembly and a shift system adapted for use in a transfer case for transferring drive torque from a primary output shaft to a secondary output shaft so as to establish a four-wheel drive mode. The clutch assembly includes a first ring journalled on a first rotary member, a second ring fixed to a second rotary member, and a plurality of rollers disposed in opposed cam tracks formed between the first and second rings. The first ring is split to define an actuation channel between its end segments. A cam rod is moveable between positions engaged with and released from one or both end segments of the split first ring. The shift system includes a mode fork which controls movement of the cam rod for establishing four distinct operational modes.
