    • PURPOSE: A process for preparing benzanthrone by reducing the amount of sulfuric acid and glycerol to be used as a starting material is provided which produces the title compound at a low cost and in a high yield. CONSTITUTION: A process for preparing benzanthrone as intermediates of VAT dyes comprises (a) producing a reaction liquid mixture by pouring anthraquinone in concentrated sulfuric acid and elevating a temperature of the above reaction liquid mixture to 120 or 125°C; (b) synthesizing benzanthrone by adding a reducing agent-dissolved glycerin to the above reaction liquid mixture and reacting at 120 to 125°C for 30min to 2hr; and purifying the obtained benzanthrone. The process inhibits the generation of tar as an impurity, promotes purity and reduces the cost of production and the amount of generation of waste by reducing the amount of sulfuric acid and glycerol.

    • PURPOSE: A process for preparing benzanthrone or substituents thereof using 2-benzoylbenzoic acid or substituents thereof instead of anthraquinone as a starting material is provided which produces the title compound at a low cost and in a high yield. CONSTITUTION: A benzanthrone or substituents thereof as intermediates of VAT dyes is prepared by reacting 1 equivalent of 2-benzoylbenzoic acid or substituents thereof with X-Y equivalent of glycerol. The process reduces production costs, the amount of harmful waste water by about 50% compared to conventional processes and produces the benzanthrone in a high yield (above 96%) and in a high purity (above 96%).
