    • PURPOSE: An automatic centering steady rest is provided to exactly measure and monitor the movement and clamping of the steady rest by the location of the electric motor. CONSTITUTION: An automatic centering steady rest(1) comprises three holding elements(5, 6, 7). The two of three holding elements have a driving unit(61). The driving unit is driven with the electric motor(21). The rotational motion of the electric motor is converted into at least two axial forward speeds of an intermediate member(8) when the force component which is generated by driving unit faces the workpiece(4). A clutch(62) is installed between the intermediate member and electric motor. The clutch sets-up the forward speed correspondent to the intermediate member. The drive unit is automatically converted into two different displacement positions through the clutch.

    • PURPOSE: A holder is provided to form a wedge unit surely automatically lockable in the case of clamping a tool, by providing one or a plurality of transverse grooves in a cone surface of a piston protrusion, and discharging hydraulic pressure oil from an interface between the cone surface and an inner surface side of a plurality of the wedge units in cooperation with the cone surface. CONSTITUTION: A piston device(14) for a tool holder consists of a piston main unit(16) and a piston protrusion(17) protruded to the forward. The protrusion(17), having first/second cone surfaces(33,34), has a thin constrictive part(35) between the second cone surface(34) and the piston(16). Each of a plurality of wedge units(31) with a space apart in a tangential direction has an arch type surface(36) of recessed shape in an inner side intending contact with the first cone surface(33). A plurality of grooves(40) are formed in the cone surface(33). Each groove(40) is provided on a surface annular and vertical to a center axis of the protrusion(17). In the case that the piston device(14) is retracted, oil in an interface between the surfaces(33,36) is discharged, contact is generated by rapidly increasing friction between both the surfaces, and the wedge unit(31) can be automatically locked with certainty.
