    • PURPOSE: A method is advantageous in reducing airborne debris and vapors during laser imaging, in increasing the speed of laser imaging, and in providing excellent cleanability and image quality. CONSTITUTION: Provided are methods of imaging a wet positive working lithographic printing member comprising the steps of providing a positive working printing member comprising a substrate(106), a hydrophilic layer(104), an infrared-absorbing layer, and, optionally, an ink-accepting surface layer(102); exposing the printing member to infrared layer imaging in an imagewise pattern removing by ablation greater than 10% by weight, and most preferably none of the infrared-absorbing layer and optional ink-accepting surface layer; and removing with water the laser-exposed areas of the infrared-absorbing layer and optional ink-accepting surface layer to reveal the underlying hydrophilic layer. The printing member may further comprise a primer layer underlying the infrared-absorbing layer with an adhesion-promoting agent present in the primer layer. Also provided are methods of preparing a wet lithographic printing member and wet positive working lithographic printing members.

    • Lithographic imaging using non-ablative printing members combines the benefits of simple construction, the ability to utilize traditional metal base supports, and amenability to imaging with low-power lasers that need not impart ablation-inducing energy levels. A representative printing member has a hydrophilic metal substrate (302) and, thereover, first (304) and second (306) layers. The first layer (304) has a thickness and an exposed surface and comprises a material that absorbs imaging radiation. The second layer (306) overlies the first layer (304) and is oleophilic and substantially transparent to imaging radiation. Exposure to imaging radiation causes the first layer and the substrate to irreversibly detach without substantial ablation, thereby facilitating removal, by subjection to the cleaning liquid, of the first and second layers where detachment has taken place.

    • A method of making a lithographic printing plate comprising the steps of : (a) providing a lithographic printing plate precursor comprising a support having a hydrophilic surface or which is provided with a hydrophilic layer, and a coating on said support, said coating comprising (i) at least one image-recording layer which comprises a photocurable composition, said composition comprising a compound which is capable of forming free radicals upon image-wise exposure, and (ii) on top thereof, an oxygen-barrier layer comprising a water-soluble or water-swellable polymer, (b) image-wise exposing said coating, (c) optionally, heating the precursor in a preheating unit, (d) treating said image-wise exposed precursor with water or an aqueous solution to remove at least part of the oxygen-barrier layer, thereby increasing the oxygen permeability of the coating to such an extent that curing of the non-exposed areas of the coating by ambient light is inhibited by quenching of free radicals with oxygen, (e) mounting the treated precursor on a plate cylinder of a lithographic printing press, and (f) developing by rotating the plate cylinder while feeding dampening liquid and/or ink to the coating, thereby removing non-exposed areas of the image-recording layer.
