    • Chemical analysis using sample processor cards (27) is performed with a centrifuge which comprises a rotatable plate (10) on which are mounted holders (16) for sample processor cards. The card holders are rotatable about an axis on the plate so that the direction of centrifugal force acting on the processor card can be changed. The sample processor cards define a series of channels through which liquid undergoing testing can be moved under the influence of centrifugal force. In the analysis of blood samples, the centrifugal force releases the reagent, separates solids from the blood, measures both reagent and blood, mixes them together and finally transports them to a chamber for optical analysis.

    • Card (17) holds a reagent supply and has a sample inlet leading to a capillary and a chamber to receive sample and reagent when centrifuged. An overflow connected to the capillary takes excess sample under centrifugal force. A cuvette communicates with a chamber for measuring the results of the reaction. There may be a second chamber which separates sample constituents and a chamber to receive a measured quantity of sample. Overflowing sample is retained in an overflow chamber. The reagent may be released for use by a seal being stripped off under centrifugal force, and this seal may also control the release of diluent to the reaction chamber.
