    • PURPOSE: Provided are low-molecular weight flavonoids extracted from Artemisia absinthium which inhibits acetylcholinesterase(AChE) activity and protecting neuronal cells and an extracting process thereof from the methanol extract of Artemisia absinthium. Therefore, the flavonoids are used for treatment of a degenerative brain disorder, Alzheimer's disease, and improvement of one's memory. CONSTITUTION: The method for extracting 4',5-dihydroxy-3',6,7-trimethoxyflavone from Artemisia absinthium comprises the steps of: fractioning the methanol extract of Artemisia absinthium using organic solvents having different polarities to give fractions; subjecting the fractions to open column chromatography using silica gel to give acetylcholinesterase(AChE) inhibitors; fractioning the acetylcholinesterase(AChE) inhibitors by thin layer chromatography(TLC) to give fractions; separating the fractions by high pressure liquid chromatography using reverse phase column to give 4',5-dihydroxy-3',6,7-trimethoxyflavone.

    • PURPOSE: Provided are a method for extracting ursolic acid from marjoram and the use thereof as an active ingredient of an acetylcholinesterase(AChE) inhibiting composition. The ursolic acid inhibits the activity of AChE, and improves one's memory, and is thus used for functional foods or remedies for improvement of one's memory. CONSTITUTION: The method for extracting ursolic acid from marjoram comprises the steps of: extracting marjoram with ethanol, followed by distillation under reduced pressure; fractioning the ethanol extract into a chloroform layer and a water layer by adding chloroform; subjecting the chloroform layer to column chromatography using silicagel and a mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol in a ratio of 94:6 to give fractions; subjecting the fractions to column chromatography using silicagel and a mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol in a ratio of 98:2 and collecting the second fraction; subjecting the second fraction to thin layer chromatography(TLC) using a mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol in a ratio of 95:5; and analyzing the acetylcholinesterase(AChE) activity of each band and collecting a fraction having the highest AChE activity.

    • PURPOSE: Provided are a method for purifying oleamide from jujube and the use thereof for ChAT-activating composition. The oleamide as a ChAT activator has prevention and treatment effects on age-associated memory impairment and senile dementia. CONSTITUTION: The method for purifying oleamide from jujube comprises the steps of: extracting jujube with methanol, followed by distillation under reduced pressure; adding chloroform to the methanol extract powder to fraction a water layer and a chloroform layer; subjecting the chloroform layer to open silicagel column chromatography with the mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol in a mixing ratio of 90:10 to give a third fraction; subjecting the chloroform layer to open silicagel column chromatography with the mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol in a mixing ratio of 80:20 to give a first fraction; subjecting the mixture of the first and second fractions to open silicagel column chromatography with the mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol in a mixing ratio of 90:10 to give a third fraction; and performing TLC with the third fraction and measuring the ChAT activity of each band and recovering a band having highest ChAT activity.
