    • Disclosed is a plasma display device characterized by comprising: a protective layer (26) for a front plate (20) in a plasma display panel, the protective layer (26) comprising a substrate protective layer (26a) formed of a thin film of a metal oxide comprising at least one of magnesium oxide, strontium oxide, calcium oxide, and barium oxide, and a particulate layer (26b) formed by adhering single crystal particles (27) of magnesium oxide having an NaCl crystal structure, surrounded by specific two types of oriented planes of (100) plane and (111) plane or by specific three types of oriented planes of (100) plane, (110) plane and (111) plane, to the substrate protective layer (26a); and a panel drive circuit configured so that the panel is driven by temporally arranging subfields in such a manner that the weight of brightness from the subfield where an entire cell initialization operation is performed, to the subfield just before the subfield where the next entire cell initialization operation is performed is monotonically decreased. The above constitution can lower a writing pulse voltage.
